This course helps participants develop a personalized wellness recovery action plan (WRAP) to better manage their mental health and take back control of their recovery. The WRAP is tailored to the individual and focuses on identifying personal triggers and developing support systems. It also provides tools to handle difficult experiences, maintain wellness, and make plans for times of crisis. The course teaches these elements over nine weekly sessions facilitated by trained professionals.

Mental Health Awareness Month is being marked with a Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds Walk on Saturday, May 25th at 3pm starting from the Crumlin Scouts Den car park. Participants will follow the Blue Slí na Sláinte walking route and return to the Den for refreshments and information about the Green Ribbon Campaign, which encourages wearing green to raise awareness of mental health issues. The walk is being organized by the Dublin 12 Suicide Prevention Group.

Free course
This free course held on June 12th and 19th from 3pm to 5.30pm in Parker Hill consists of 4 modules to help participants build self-esteem, develop coping skills, change negative thought patterns, and increase resilience. The course teaches ways to take control and signpost supports for a new life. Interested individuals should provide their name to Mary Barnes or call 496 5558.
Assertiveness poster
A 20-week personal development programme starting in July will be offered on Wednesday and Friday afternoons in Rathmines for people with experience of mental illness. The program includes modules in personal and interpersonal skills, assertiveness and confidence building, and CV and interview preparation. An information session will take place on June 21st from 3-5pm for prospective students to learn more about the course from past participants and the tutor. The fee for the program is €40 and priority for places will be given to those living in certain Dublin postal codes. May 2013 newsletter final version
Patrick shares his personal story of experiencing mental health difficulties from a young age. He dropped out of school and began drinking and getting into trouble, which marked the start of his mental health problems. He was first hospitalized at age 18 and remained in psychiatric care for nine years. After stopping drinking at age 24, his mental health began to improve. However, he was later struck by a car and suffered extensive injuries, spending months in recovery. He found the physical and mental recovery very challenging but was eventually able to complete his education and now lives independently while managing his mental health through exercise and diet.

Amnesty International: Amnesty is at the moment designing a course for people who work in the area of mental health around human rights and mental health and they need our help to make it work as users of the mental health services. They will have a focus meeting in Gateway on the 16th of January 2013 from 4.00pm to 6.00pm – all members welcome. Posting of Newsletter 2013: Every month we post out the newsletter, schedule and member’s to about 80 members – unfortunately budget will be tighter next year and we need to be kinder to the environment. From January 2013 - you will be able to find the newsletter, schedule and member’s letter in four places:- In drop-in at the start of the month and all throughout the month (During drop-in hours Monday&Thursday). In the Rathmines Pembroke Community Partnership 11 Wynnefield Road, Rathmines (five days a week during office hours). Welcome: Mary Q chaired the meeting and welcomed all members 2. Minutes: The minutes of the members meeting from 12th November were read by Mary Q. A discussion took place about allowing people without self-experience of mental ill health into Gateway. It was suggested by that this should apply to volunteers and students. 3. Cinema: Ciaran and Nicholas delivered letter to Cinema Manager requesting reduced rates for Gateway members. The Manager will bring this letter to the next staff meeting. Ciaran& Nicholas will follow up this matter. 4. Members Decision: Indian Head Massage and use of computers in the back room: It was decided to allow members use the computers when the massage is in progress provided they do not use the speakers. There is a divider that can be used for privacy. 5. Members Decision: Dart board:None of the members present were interested in playing darts. 6. Peer Council: Members were not clear as to why there was a speaker invited into Gateway to talk on the Human Rights Enhancement Committee. A discussion followed about the role of a peer council and the members having more involvement in selecting the speakers. 7. Christmas Meet Ups: Members were reminded of the meet up times and venues. A big thank you to all members who volunteered to attend these and support Members to meet up during Christmas. 8. Members Decision: Work experience – a member of Gateway wants to get work experience for three months three days a week:- members voted in favour of allowing this member do work experience in Gateway 9. Member’s involvement 2013: A discussion took place about groups members would like to be involved in. The majority of members said they would like to see the walking group re-established. Members can get involved in the following in 2013: Advisory Committee, Decorating Group, Newsletter Group, Hospital Visiting Group, Being an active Member during drop – sharing your skills with other members e.g. teaching people pool, computers, etc., Leadership – cinema going group, theatre going group, walking group etc. Next member meeting is the 14th of January 2013 and the agenda is 1.
