농가의 연평균 농업소득이 1,000만원도 되지 않는 농업현실에서 대부분의 농부들이 고통을 겪고 있고, 영농으로 생계를 이어가지 못하고 있습니다. 금년에는 시장 쌀 가격의 급격한 저하로 인해 농민들은 생존권을 위협받고 있고, 그러한 가운데 농부들이 목소리를 내고자 해도 집회마저 차단되고 있습니다. 농부들의 어려운 경제 현실은 농촌지역 경제의 침체와 농촌 공동체의 붕괴로 이어지고 있습니다.
이러한 가운데 국제슬로푸드한국협회가 2013년부터 슬로푸드생물다양성 재단에 등재한 맛의 방주가 농가경제에 활력소가 되고 있습니다. 오늘 토론회에서 발표자 분들이 발표하듯이 사라지는 종자나 음식을 지키고자 하는 슬로푸드 맛의 방주 프로젝트는 우리의 토종자원을 지키는 것을 넘어서 지역경제를 활성화하고, 전통음식을 계승하며, 소규모 가족농에게 희망을 주고 있습니다.
맛의 방주가 이러한 성과를 가져오고 있음에도 안타깝게도 우리나라의 맛의 방주 등재는 전세계 3,800여개 중에서 55개에 불과합니다. 그동안 민간단체인 슬로푸드한국협회가 맛의 방주 등재를 위해 노력을 기울였지만, 인적 자원 및 물적 자원의 부족으로 슬로푸드국제협회가 기대하는 만큼, 또 슬로푸드한국협회가 추진하고자 하는 맛의 방주를 등재하지 못하고 있습니다. 이러한 가운데 많은 토종자원과 종자가 사라지고 있고, 농부의 노령화는 더 많은 토종자원과 종자가 사라지도록 하고 있습니다.
