Check-list worship might make us feel like we’ve done what we have to, but what God desires is that we be a living sacrifice, and that we be devoted to Him and His people. This lesson reminds us to change our attitude about worship so that we can grow. This lesson is from Brian Haines ( http://www.sunsetchurchofchrist.net ), with some changes made by me.

In the Book of Matthew, Chapter 6, verses 5 to 16, Jesus provides us with His instructions on prayer. In those verses, Jesus says 3 times, “When you pray”. Thus, prayer is not an option. It is a requirement, a commandment. Jesus tells us what to do and what not to do when we pray. He starts and ends with what we are not to do, and between those, He tell us what to do. And after that, He tells us that our Father knows what we need.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
3. 13 Is any one of you in trouble? He
should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him
sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone of you
sick? He should call the elders of the
church to pray over him and anoint him
with oil in the Name of the Lord.
JAMES 5:13-20
4. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will
make the sick person well; the Lord will
raise him up. If he has sinned, he will
be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your
sins to each other and pray for each
other so that you may be healed. The
prayer of a righteous man is powerful
and effective.
JAMES 5:13-20
5. 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He
prayed earnestly that it would not rain,
and it did not rain on the land for three
and a half years. 18 Again he prayed,
and the Heavens gave rain, and the
earth produced its crops.
JAMES 5:13-20
6. 19 My brothers, if one of you should
wander from the truth and someone
should bring him back. 20 Remember
this: Whoever turns a sinner from the
error of his way will save him from
death and cover a multitude of sins.
JAMES 5:13-20
16. What that means is that the way that a
Church grows in love and unity is by
being aware of the experiences of all
people and praying across the entire
Church.
17. “James’ knees grew
hard like a camel’s
because of his constant
worship of God,
kneeling and asking
forgiveness for his
people.”
-Eusebius
29. Now, for those of you who are suffering,
we need you to see that this is your
responsibility. You can pray for yourself,
and before you ask others to pray for
you, you need to be praying.
35. 14 Is anyone of you sick? He should call
the elders of the church to pray over
him and anoint him with oil in the
Name of the Lord.
JAMES 5:14-16
36. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will
make the sick person well; the Lord will
raise him up. If he has sinned, he will
be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your
sins to each other and pray for each
other so that you may be healed. The
prayer of a righteous man is powerful
and effective.
JAMES 5:14-16
43. It’s not that everybody gets healed
and nobody gets healed,
but He decides who He heals.
44. We’re talking about the church and the
elders in the church. We’re a bible-
believing church, and the elders are also
called pastors, and these are the senior
leaders, and we believe in all of this.
49. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each
other and pray for each other so that
you may be healed. The prayer of a
righteous man is powerful and
effective.
JAMES 5:16-18
50. 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He
prayed earnestly that it would not rain,
and it did not rain on the land for three
and a half years. 18 Again he prayed,
and the Heavens gave rain, and the
earth produced its crops.
JAMES 5:16-18
52. The key to prayer is always
understanding God’s a Father, we’re His
kids. If we believe that we have a good
Dad who loves us, we’ll talk to Him.
53. You forget that Jesus is your
righteousness and mediator, and that
your righteousness is in Christ.
54. You’re in the position of Christ and that
the Father loves you as much as He loves
the Son, and He hears you because you
pray through the Son. He’s your
righteousness.
57. 19 My brothers, if one of you should
wander from the truth and someone
should bring him back. 20 Remember
this: Whoever turns a sinner from the
error of his way will save him from
death and cover a multitude of sins.
JAMES 5:19-20
62. Not everyone in the church will be a
pastor, but everyone in the church
should have a pastor’s heart.
