The seawater quality of the northeastern coast of the gulf of Cariaco was analyzed by sampling 17 stations fromJune to November 2007. pH ranged between 6.91 and 8.52; temperature, between 24 and 32°C; salinity, between 1.00 and37.85 units; oxygen, between 2.43 and 9.87 mg/L; ammonium, between below detection limits and and 4.80 mmol/L; nitrates, between below detection limits and 11.55 mmol/L; nitrites, between below detection limits and 2.53 mmol/L; and phosphates, between below detection limits and 3.84 mmol/L. The hydrochemical variability of the gulf is predicated on the weather, tradewinds affecting both coastal upwelling and precipitation, the latter in turn having a significant bearing on increased runoffby the River Carinicuao and other bodies of water discharging into the gulf.
