Medical Projects for Northern and Eastern Provinces
AMAF and Rotary in Partnership
Australian Medical Aid Foundation (AMAF) and Rotary has joined
hands to address the shortage of medical equipment’s for our
communities in the Northern
and Eastern Sri Lanka.
In 2013, AMAF and Rotary Clubs in Rotary International District
9685 focused on providing much needed equipment for the
Ophthalmology Department at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. The
Following equipment’s were identified by Dr Malaravan
 Yag Laser
 TOPCON - Slit Lamp
 TOPCON -Auto Kerato-Refractometer
 Keratometer
 Echoscan
This was verified by AMAF, followed by a proposal to the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville to engage
Rotary.
Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville took the leadership role and was assisted by The Rotary Club of Rouse
Hill, Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrise and Rotary Club of Glenhaven in Rotary International District 9685
and Rotary Club of Nallur and Rotary Club of Colombo Mid-City from Rotary International District 3220
worked tirelessly to make this project a success.
The clubs in District 3220 worked with the local suppliers of the identified equipment and a budget of AUD
$120,000 was required to complete the project.
Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville raised
over AUD $15,000 thru their annual
BOLLYHILLS fundraiser. AMAF
contributed AUD $50,000 to this
project. An application was put for a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation.

Under the guidance from Barry Phillips (Rotary Club of
Glenhaven and Rotary District 9685 Grants chairman) and
Tony Castley (Rotary District 9685 Foundation Chair), Alan
Jones (Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville) applied for a
successful Global Grant of $44,000. Rotary District 9685
contributed AUD $10,000 as DDF. Total Rotary contribution
towards this project was approximately AUD $71,000.
The equipment’s were purchased and supplied to the department in June
2014 and is being used by the two surgeons attached to the Jaffna
Teaching Hospital which serves the needs of the eye care of around
650,000 people. This hospital is the referral centre for all of Northern
Province Districts which has a population of 1.3 million.
Further funding of AUD $8500
was requested to provide
optional accessories to the
equipment’s supplied so that the surgeons, which would assist in taking the initial diagnostics to the
population who are unable to travel to the hospital. Rotary Club of Vinegar Hill was able to secure a Rotary
District 9685 grant of AUD $6000 and further contribution of AUD $2500 from the AMAF made this possible

We, as Rotarians have answered the call to develop
a good eye care network system in Northern Sri
Lanka. Currently over 6000 patients are being
treated thru the Department of Ophthalmology.
Department of Ophthalmology, TH Jaffna – Special Eye care services 2014
The Special Eye Care services provided is a directed benefit
of The Rotary Foundation Global Grant and the District
Grant from District 9685. A population of over a million
people will benefit from this Rotary Foundation Global Grant
project.
