The Discussion and...the Challenge
What activities are popular with young people in your country? Try to think of a few
examples in each category, then discuss why people like doing these things and say what
kind of people tend to enjoy activities like this.

Now, here’s the challenge. Viseu Town Hall is organising a Summer Club for 12 – 18 year
olds and they’re looking for suggestions about what kind of activities they should include.
Your group needs to decide on what activities you’d like to have on the programme!

2. Coming Up With A Plan
Ok, you could suggest they include a football tournament and have a room full of
playstations and computers, but.... everybody does that anyway! This is your chance to try
activities you’ve always wanted to, but never had a chance. Maybe you’d love to try
parachuting, or maybe you want to learn how to dance hip-hop. Each of you should decide
what activity you would really like to try, something you’ve never done before, and tell your
group about it. The town hall committee is going to choose the activities that people sound
most enthusiastic about, so get your group to help you come up with lots of ideas about
why it would great to try your activity.
Writing up your “dream activity”
Your teacher will guide you through the activities on pages 32 and 33 in your coursebook.
This will help you to write a good article.
When you are ready, each person in the group should write an article about the activity they
want to do. Hand in the articles to your teacher, who will pass them on to the committee!
Convincing everyone else!

3. Now it is time to make your final presentation. Your group will have to “sell” your ideas to
the rest of the class, so practise together what you want to say to them – introduce your
activities, say why it will be great to have an opportunity to do them. Be ready to convince
them that lots of people will want to join in!
When you present your ideas, each person in the group must take a turn to talk about one
bit of your Ideas For The Summer Club. When you finish, your “audience” will probably have
some questions , so be ready to answer them!
When you are listening to the other groups, make a note of anything you want to ask them
about. When they have finished their presentation, you will have a chance to ask them for
more details, or what they think about something.
