Regional overview
• Attempts to establish the Regional Soil Laboratory
Network for NENA were made in 2019 but it was
ultimately decided to postpone it because of the
little response of registered laboratories to
GLOSOLAN initiatives
Only 3 responsive/active laboratories from Iran,
Iraq and Yemen
• These laboratories were rewarded by making
them participate in the GLOSOLAN PT 2019

Way forward
• National focal points were informed about the
current situation – they will try to get their national
laboratories to be more active
• GLOSOLAN will make one more attempt to establish
the Regional Soil Laboratory Network for NENA in
2020.
• If registered laboratories will not become active
(responsive to GLOSOLAN initiatives), ACTIVE
LABORATORIES will be involved in the work of
AFRILAB and SEALNET depending on their location. In
this regard, the Regional Soil Laboratory Network for
NENA will not be established.

The United Arab Emirates has undertaken several initiatives to promote sustainable soil management: 1. The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) conducted a 3-year soil salinity survey of over 4,000 farms and 16,000 samples, developing a soil salinity management plan. 2. EAD established an Abu Dhabi Soil Archiving Facility in 2016 to preserve over 5,000 soil samples according to international standards. 3. EAD celebrates World Soil Day annually to promote efforts to protect UAE land and soil, and this year will launch the UAE soil map.

Item 3. Current initiatives, new proposals and next steps on GSP pillar 5

Soils FAO-GSP

The first meeting of the Near East and North African Soil Laboratory Network (NENALAB) was held virtually from June 9-11, 2020. Eighty-two experts from 44 laboratories in 13 countries participated. The meeting aimed to establish the regional network and governance, agree on 2020 activities, and collect regional input for the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN). Participants discussed standardizing soil analysis methods, training on quality control and laboratory safety, and electing a chair and vice-chairs for the network. The next meeting will continue to be held virtually to allocate more resources toward trainings and laboratory improvements.

This soil salinity leads to low agricultural production and food insecurity. 3) Addressing soil salinity through techniques like cover crops, mulching, and fertigation is a key factor in improving food security. Djibouti is working to establish partnerships to develop strategies to reduce soil salinity and improve soil health.

This document summarizes research on mapping soil salinity variation in Senegal's peanut basin region using remote sensing data. The study area showed electrical conductivity values ranging from 40-542 mS/m. Random Forest and Kriging models were used to map soil salinity, with Random Forest performing better with a lower RMSE of 19.46 mS/m. The most important variables in the Random Forest model were spectral bands from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, NDWI water index, and radar bands from Sentinel-1. Accurately mapping soil salinity at a national scale could help determine affected areas, develop rehabilitation strategies, and inform organizations like INSAS on soil conditions.
