It revolves being culturally competent and by that understanding religion, mental health, and the combination of both by identifying religious competence as part of cultural competence. This involves implementing as well as determining the “patients’ psychological and existential frameworks; it can also play a key role in determining behavioral variables (which, in turn, influence physiological variables) that have a direct bearing on mental health” (Whitley, 2012). My strengths would be to initially identify the patient’s spiritual preferences, being attentive by being an active listener to the patient’s spiritual needs. Moreover, spirituality is essentially an unchecked vital sign that is essentially to all patients regardless of their religion. However, weakness mainly finding consultation for patients whom are very particular about whom they speak. Also being exposed to different patient populations within med-surg that have different capacities which can be difficult to honor their wishes but do so to the best of my ability. When it comes to patients, it’s important to improve patient care through “taking a spiritual history, respecting and supporting spiritual beliefs, challenging beliefs, praying with patients, and appropriate consultation with clergy” (Koenig, 2008). This is something I will continue to work on as time goes on. If I were a patient with the capacity, I would coordinate with the health care team about my preferences and needs and be updated on all of the happenings regarding my plan of care. However, should I lack the mental capacity to make such ethical decisions, my advocate would be that of my parents fulfill my wishes when it comes to my plan of care. They will be informed about all options when it comes to treatments and seek both a realistic, viable alternatives should they be present. “Probably more than any other profession, nursing deals with giving hope to the hopeless. Although other professionals, such as physicians and clergy, also offer hope, it is the nurse who stands with the sick person for extended periods of time offering care and support when medical science can no longer offer a cure,” (Shelly & Miller, 2006, 262). This describes the purpose of spiritual care. But, what is good spiritual care? “Good spiritual care should bring glory to God, and not mere comfort to the patient or acceptance with the health care community,” (Shelly & Miller, 2006, 263). In this manner, I am lacking in my ability to meet this need. I know I meet the basic standards as described by Shelly and Miller: “Sometimes spiritual care means simply being present, praying, sharing from Scripture, offering a word of witness and encouragement or participating in a healing service. At other times it may include arranging referrals, planning creative strategies for follow-up care in the home or helping a person become connected to a Christian community,” (Shelly & Miller, 2006, 263). This statement is something I can do and have done for patients. I know which religious figures in the community will come to our facility to see patients if requested. I have stood with patients when they pray, and have prayed for patients per their request.
I believe spiritual care to be important in the complete care of a patient. I believe spiritual care brings positivity and comfort to patients. I do not feel it is appropriate for me to ask the patient if I can pray with/for him/her, but if the patient asks me to pray for/with him/her, I will gladly do so and have done so in the past with patients. Spirituality is an individual belief that must respect in each patient, as their level of faith, their beliefs, and their religion may not match my own. “A recent survey of 4,000 nurses identified that meeting patients’ spiritual needs is extremely important and improves overall quality of nursing care. However, only 5% felt they achieved this goal. Although nurses appear to be aware of spiritual needs, lack of clear definitions and practical guidance means they are often uncertain about how these can be addressed as part of clinical care” (Sartori, 2010). I felt this awareness and uncertainty in

1- I can totally see where there would be tension between these two, especially in today’s world. I am no expert on religion or science for that matter, but I do feel like some of the tension is unnecessary. I feel that the two can work to benefit our patients by balancing them with the needs of the patient. Let’s take my kids for instance, if they were sick with some known treatable disease there would be no other option in my mind to treat them with science and medicine that has been proven to work. I wouldn’t only pray for them to get better and not do anything about it, but I would pray for them and do whatever was necessary to help my family deal with the stress and worry of a child being sick. Here we have used them both to our benefit and they each serve a different purpose and effectiveness. Thanks again for your post!
2-My perception of the tension between science and religion is founded at first glance and then not when looked at more closely. Science and religion can coincide in health care if respected for their own strengths and limitations. I feel that a healthy balance of both can benefit our patients providing different needs when they’re needed. I have seen with my own eyes CRP markers drop in an infant receiving antibiotic treatment and I have also seen an infant that wasn’t supposed to live by scientific probability actually make it and thrive with prayer being the only obvious intervention. So, trying to single out one over the other as more effective than the other seems less beneficial than trying to work them both in when the patient requires such help.
I feel that science is good for some of the more usual cases and things we feel we can help with its information, and I also feel that we can use religion to help a patient with their mental aspects of healing. We can quantify an improvement in a patient through lab levels and such, but it's hard to do the same with religion and how a patient uses that tool as comfort or however they use it in their lives. “Some observational studies suggest that people who have regular spiritual practices tend to live longer. Another study points to a possible mechanism: interleukin (IL)-6. Increased levels of IL-6 are associated with an increased incidence of disease. A research study involving 1700 older adults showed that those who attended church were half as likely to have elevated levels of IL-6. The authors hypothesized that religious commitment may improve stress control by offering better coping mechanisms, richer social support, and the strength of personal values and worldview” (NCBI, 2001). In this example we see the benefits were surveyed to be founded, but the exact workings aren’t exactly known. The great thing about science is that usually we have some tangible results that are repeatable and there’s safety to be found in that. Restoring balance through cultural safety & the medicine wheel
North American culture sees health as an individual problem, but we live in dynamic, intercultural communities. Health is multifaceted with issues related to mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical health. Our culture can be a barrier to caring for our clients. Each area of the medicine wheel needs to be balanced for wholistic health for the client, where the client is the person, family, group, or community. Indigenous teachings support addressing all areas of the person to achieve balance. Cultural safety stresses the importance of reflection and acceptance of differences. We should not treat everyone the same, but we do need to recognize and acknowledge our blind spots.

Dimensions of Religion
Religion is complex and multifaceted in both form and function. Religious faith and the institutions derived from that faith become a central focus in meeting the human needs of those who believe. The majority of faith traditions address the issues of illness and wellness, of disease and healing, of caring and curing (Ebersole, Hess, & Luggan, 2008; Fogel & Rivera, 2010; Leonard & Carlson, 2010).
Religious Factors
Influencing Human Behavior First, it is necessary to identify specific religious factors that may influence human behavior. No single religious factor operates in isolation, but rather exists in combination with other religious factors and the person’s ethnic, racial, and cultural background. When religion and ethnicity combine to influence a person, the term ethnoreligion is sometimes used. Examples of ethnoreligious groups include the Amish, Russian Jews, Lebanese Muslims, Italian, Irish, or Polish Catholics, Tibetan Buddhists, American Samoan Mormons, and so forth. Faulkner and DeJong (1966) have proposed five major dimensions of religion in their classic work on the subject: experiential, ritualistic, ideologic, intellectual, and consequential.
Experiential Dimension The experiential dimension recognizes that all religions have expectations of members and that the religious person will at some point in life achieve direct knowledge of ultimate reality or will experience religious emotion. Every religion recognizes this subjective religious experience as a sign of religiosity.
Ritualistic Dimension The ritualistic dimension pertains to religious practices expected of the followers and may include worship, prayer, participation in sacraments, and fasting
Ideologic Dimension The ideologic dimension refers to the set of beliefs to which its followers must adhere in order to call themselves members. Commitment to the group or movement as a social process results, and members experience a sense of belonging or affiliation.
Intellectual Dimension The intellectual dimension refers to specific sets of beliefs or explanations or to the cognitive structuring of meaning. Members are expected to be informed about the basic tenets of the religion and to be familiar with sacred writings or scriptures. The intellectual and the ideologic are closely related because acceptance of a dimension presupposes knowledge of it.
Consequential Dimension The consequential dimension refers to religiously defined standards of conduct and to prescriptions that specify what followers’ attitudes and behaviors should be as a consequence of their religion. The consequential dimension governs people’s relationships with others.

Who Should Conduct a Spiritual
Assessment?
Depending on the type and size of
your organization, different staff mem-
bers can and should conduct spiritual
assessments. As with other types of
assessments, the spiritual assessment
should be multidisciplinary. Physicians,
therapists, nurses, and clinical pastoral
staff should receive training on the value
of spiritual assessment and the tools
that should be used to assess a patient’s
spirituality.
Approaches to Determining Spiritual
Assessment Content
In designing a spiritual assessment, your
organization will need to determine the
mechanism(s) you will use to collect
information and when an in-depth spiri-
tual assessment will be necessary. Your
organization may want to consider the
following questions:

patient regarding his or her spirituali-
ty? If so, some appropriate questions
may address support systems, prayer,
spiritual goals, religious or spiritual
resources used to cope with chal-
lenges, and beliefs about life and

Dimensions of Religion
Religion is complex and multifaceted in both form and function. Religious faith and the institutions derived from that faith become a central focus in meeting the human needs of those who believe. The majority of faith traditions address the issues of illness and wellness, of disease and healing, of caring and curing (Ebersole, Hess, & Luggan, 2008; Fogel & Rivera, 2010; Leonard & Carlson, 2010).
Religious Factors
Influencing Human Behavior First, it is necessary to identify specific religious factors that may influence human behavior. No single religious factor operates in isolation, but rather exists in combination with other religious factors and the person’s ethnic, racial, and cultural background. When religion and ethnicity combine to influence a person, the term ethnoreligion is sometimes used. Examples of ethnoreligious groups include the Amish, Russian Jews, Lebanese Muslims, Italian, Irish, or Polish Catholics, Tibetan Buddhists, American Samoan Mormons, and so forth. Faulkner and DeJong (1966) have proposed five major dimensions of religion in their classic work on the subject: experiential, ritualistic, ideologic, intellectual, and consequential.
Experiential Dimension The experiential dimension recognizes that all religions have expectations of members and that the religious person will at some point in life achieve direct knowledge of ultimate reality or will experience religious emotion. Every religion recognizes this subjective religious experience as a sign of religiosity.
Ritualistic Dimension The ritualistic dimension pertains to religious practices expected of the followers and may include worship, prayer, participation in sacraments, and fasting
Ideologic Dimension The ideologic dimension refers to the set of beliefs to which its followers must adhere in order to call themselves members. Commitment to the group or movement as a social process results, and members experience a sense of belonging or affiliation.
Intellectual Dimension The intellectual dimension refers to specific sets of beliefs or explanations or to the cognitive structuring of meaning. Members are expected to be informed about the basic tenets of the religion and to be familiar with sacred writings or scriptures. The intellectual and the ideologic are closely related because acceptance of a dimension presupposes knowledge of it.
Consequential Dimension The consequential dimension refers to religiously defined standards of conduct and to prescriptions that specify what followers’ attitudes and behaviors should be as a consequence of their religion. The consequential dimension governs people’s relationships with others.

of how the patient wants to utilize spiri-
tual or religious beliefs in their care or

A staff member’s comfort in assess-
ing spirituality may be linked to his or
her own experiences with spirituality.
For this reason, if your organization or
community has pastoral care resources,
it may also be helpful to access
information from pastoral care profes-
sionals. Clinically trained, professional
pastoral care providers can offer insight
and assistance in developing spiritual
assessments for your organization.
Who Should Conduct a Spiritual
Assessment?
Depending on the type and size of
your organization, different staff mem-
bers can and should conduct spiritual
assessments. As with other types of
assessments, the spiritual assessment
should be multidisciplinary. Physicians,
therapists, nurses, and clinical pastoral
staff should receive training on the value
of spiritual assessment and the tools
that should be used to assess a patient’s
spirituality.
Approaches to Determining Spiritual
Assessment Content
In designing a spiritual assessment, your
organization will need to determine the
mechanism(s) you will use to collect
information and when an in-depth spiri-
tual assessment will be necessary. Your
organization may want to consider the
following questions:
■ Will staff ask direct questions of the
patient regarding his or her spirituali-
ty? If so, some appropriate questions
may address support systems, prayer,
spiritual goals, religious or spiritual
resources used to cope with chal-
lenges, and beliefs about life and
illness.

What does the Joint Commission
require?
A Per standards and elements of per-formance (EPs) found in the
“Provision of Care, Treatment, and
Services” (PC) chapter in the accredita-
tion manuals,* the Joint Commission
requires organizations to include a spiri-
tual assessment as part of the overall
assessment of a patient to determine
how the patient’s spiritual outlook can
affect his or her care, treatment, and
services. This assessment should also
determine whether more in-depth
assessments are necessary.
While the Joint Commission leaves
the specifics to each organization, spiri-
tual assessment should, at a minimum,
determine the patient’s religious affilia-
tion (if any), as well as any beliefs or
spiritual practices that are important to
the patient. While the content and for-
mat of the spiritual assessment will vary
depending on the organization and type
of patients served, organizations should
develop a basic policy regarding the con-
tent and scope of spiritual assessments
and outline who is qualified and compe-
tent to perform such assessments with.

With the end of the Cold War, Central Asia, a region that for many remains relatively obscure, has enjoyed renewed attention. One area of particular interest for many observers has been the impact of the so-called “Islamic factor” on domains like regional security, domestic politics, and international relations. However, the region is sometimes treated as peripheral to the rest of the Islamic world, while Central Asian Muslims are depicted as casual and ignorant in comparison to their supposedly more rigorous and “authentic” coreligionists elsewhere. As a result, Islam’s role in Central Asia, past and present, remains poorly understood and misconstrued as a source of danger, backwardness, and instability. The goal of this course is to shed light on the different ways that people make sense of Islam in contemporary Central Asia, with a particular focus on the diversity of Islamic belief and practice in the region. Special emphasis will also be placed on exploring the ways in which Islam is imbricated with, rather than opposed to, modernity and modern ideologies like nationalism and the nation-state.
Class meetings will consist of lecture and discussion. Students will be expected to participate in class discussions and will learn to think critically, and to substantiate beliefs and opinions with facts and context.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. - 1. It revolves being culturally competent and by that understanding religion, mental health, and the combination of both by identifying religious competence as part of cultural competence. This involves implementing as well as determining the “patients’ psychological and existential frameworks; it can also play a key role in determining behavioral variables (which, in turn, influence physiological variables) that have a direct bearing on mental health” (Whitley, 2012). My strengths would be to initially identify the patient’s spiritual preferences, being attentive by being an active listener to the patient’s spiritual needs. Moreover, spirituality is essentially an unchecked vital sign that is essentially to all patients regardless of their religion. However, weakness mainly finding consultation for patients whom are very particular about whom they speak. Also being exposed to different patient populations within med-surg that have different capacities which can be difficult to honor their wishes but do so to the best of my ability. When it comes to patients, it’s important to improve patient care through “taking a spiritual history, respecting and supporting spiritual beliefs, challenging beliefs, praying with patients, and appropriate consultation with clergy” (Koenig, 2008). This is something I will continue to work on as time goes on. If I were a patient with the capacity, I would coordinate with the health care team about my preferences and needs and be updated on all of the happenings regarding my plan of care. However, should I lack the mental capacity to make such ethical decisions, my advocate would be that of my parents fulfill my wishes when it comes to my plan of care. They will be informed about all options when it comes to treatments and seek both a realistic, viable alternatives should they be present.
