Despite growing Islamophobia in America, many Americans are still converting to Islam. Media portrayals of Muslims as violent or anti-American have influenced public perceptions and may help spark Islamophobia. However, some American Muslims feel they can have both a Muslim and American identity, being proud of both their faith and their country.

Despite the violence, over a thousand people participated in Freedom Rides over the next six months to end bus segregation across the South.

Victims had no common traits and were seemingly random. Police were tipped off about a fingerprint at another crime scene, leading them to identify Muhammad and Malvo. Muhammad was sentenced to death and Malvo to life in prison without parole. Serial killers are difficult to identify because they appear normal and plan organized crimes without leaving evidence.

Most child soldiers are between 14-18 years old, though some have been as young as 9. Both boys and girls serve as child soldiers in many countries around the world today, with over 300,000 child soldiers globally who are often given drugs and forced to commit violent acts in violation of their basic human rights.

The Beltway Snipers were John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo who went on a shooting spree in the Washington D.C. area in October 2002, killing 10 people and injuring 3 others over the course of 3 weeks. They were arrested on October 24th after an HVAC mechanic tipped off police to two men sleeping in a car, where police found a rifle matching the bullets from 11 of the 14 sniper attacks. Both men were convicted, with Muhammad sentenced to death and Malvo sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Following US president Donald Trump’s ascension to power, the world has seen a sharp rise in hate crimes against Muslims and other minorities.
A 2016 Georgetown University report documented the effects of Trump’s campaign rhetoric on his supporters. Whilst 2015 saw the sharpest increase in documented hate crimes (180 offences), new reports continue trickling into various watchdog sources.
As Trump fights to keep his travel ban in place and various US officials begin dialogue with foreign nationals, many are keeping a watchful eye on events surrounding the Muslim world.
The Charlie Hebdo, Bataclan, German Christmas Market, Orlando gay nightclub and other violent terrorist attacks have compounded societal divisions, spurring bitter resentment between various denominations of Western society, with secular and moderate Muslims caught in the crossfire.
Many are unsure as to how to ameliorate the crisis. Sections of the Left have tried to accommodate refugees fleeing hostile war zones within the MENA region, whilst far-right factions have pushed for legislation to close the borders and stave off further terrorist attacks. With no end in sight, all sides remain vigilant against new provocations.

Try different methodologies. Lollygag. Hug your local Sheik. Flash mob (the more, the merrier). Most importantly, just be yourself, but stay safe. Record your observations using our template, either via a journal, blog, social media, video, or with an old-fashioned pen and paper.

BENEATH THE VEIL: A CLOSER LOOK AT ISLAMOPHOBIA
Following US president Donald Trump’s ascension to power, the world has seen a sharp rise in hate crimes against Muslims and other minorities.
A 2016 Georgetown University report documented the effects of Trump’s campaign rhetoric on his supporters. Whilst 2015 saw the sharpest increase in documented hate crimes (180 offences), new reports continue trickling into various watchdog sources.
As Trump fights to keep his travel ban in place and various US officials begin dialogue with foreign nationals, many are keeping a watchful eye on events surrounding the Muslim world.
The Charlie Hebdo, Bataclan, German Christmas Market, Orlando gay nightclub and other violent terrorist attacks have compounded societal divisions, spurring bitter resentment between various denominations of Western society, with secular and moderate Muslims caught in the crossfire.
Many are unsure as to how to ameliorate the crisis. Sections of the Left have tried to accommodate refugees fleeing hostile war zones within the MENA region, whilst far-right factions have pushed for legislation to close the borders and stave off further terrorist attacks. With no end in sight, all sides remain vigilant against new provocations.

Is Media Responsible for Rise of Islamophobia in America?
America is home to one of the most diverse Muslim inhabitants in the world. This includes people of nearly every cultural groups, country and school of thought. A significant proportion of Americans are of the opinion that Islam as a religion is incomparable with American values. Nathan Lean has stated that media plays a major role in the promotion of Islamophobia throughout the world. Reports have been observed where seven charitable foundations have spent 43 million dollars between 2001 to 2009 in order to support the spread of anti-Muslim rhetoric. Another factor was revealed which included 2010 Gallup poll win, which 43% of the Americans were, reported to feel a sense of prejudice against Muslims. Fox news has also been identified as the small component of Islamophobia in US media. Fox news has been found to retract false claims about Muslims. Various empirical evidences have been found to provide possible interactions between the latent Muslim feelings and media coverage.
However, since 2011, Muslims in the United States have been showing significant concern regarding extremism in the name of Islam across the world. Concurrently, majority are of the opinion that there is minimal support of extremism with Muslim community even though the general public differs (Spring 1,5). This has led to a rise in discernment and fear against Muslims in America. Such a social aversion and prejudice against Muslims in America has been gradually facilitating and continuing by vehement and uncivilized stereotypes exhibited in diverse forms of American media organization and political domains which instigate high level of prejudice, discrimination and exclusion of the Muslims. While some Americans believe Islamic religion promotes terrorism, this misconception is due to ignorance caused by media, but this could be solved by mandatory education about Islam in colleges.
The effect of media, chiefly mass news media as well as technology, in influencing Islamophobia has been increasing concern from the time of the 9/11 attacks. Several standpoints tend to problematize the way the media through numerous avenues related to news and film as well as nonfiction destructively depict, racialize and demonize Muslim-American identities. The impression of these edifices of Arabs and Muslims on unconstructive typecasts as well as events of marginalization amongst Muslim-American communities are apprehended in many academic domains.
