Mostly used in question structures:
• The children can swim.
• Can the children swim?
• Does she work very hard?
• She works very hard.

• Did he use to live in New York?

Inversion
After words with negative meaning:

• I have never taken the underground.
• Never have I ever taken the underground.
• Not until they printed the document out did they
notice the mistake.
• They didn’t notice the mistake until they printed the
document out.
• She is not only beautiful, (but) she is also very nice.
• Not only is she beautiful, (but) she is also very nice.
• Shortly after our series had started the electricity went
out.
• No sooner had our series started than the electricity
went out.
Inversed conditionals
• First conditional (should):
• Use the word “Should” instead of “If”
• If you need help, I will lend you a hand  Should you need help, I´ll lend you a hand.
• Second conditional (were / were to)
• If I were a politician, I would be honest.  Were I a politician, I would be honest.
• If he came to visit us, he would stay for days.  Were he to visit us, he would stay for days.
• Third conditional (had)
• If you had come earlier, you could have eaten pizza.  Had you come earlier, you could have
eaten pizza.
