2. Objectives
On successful completion of this module students
will be expected at threshold level to:
• analyse and interpret at slow speed 15-20 word
chunks at a time various simple phrases,
functions and sentences;
• analyse and translate short and simple texts; and
• find equivalent vocabulary on topics related to
social-economic, cultural and environmental
issues in both source and target languages.
3. Content
The syllabus will typically include:
• introduction to and practice of short term memory skills,
consecutive interpreting skills (i.e. analysing and interpreting simple
phrases, functions and sentences from simple audio sources such as
news, short talks) with a slow speed 15-20 word chunks at a time
focusing on topics relating to socio-economic, cultural and
environmental issues;
• introduction to and practice of basic translation skills (i.e. analysing
and translating simple phrases, functions, and sentences from short
and low technical texts such as news, advertisements, letters,
manuals, etc.) focusing on such topics associo-economic, cultural,
and environmental issues; and
• introduction to and practice of a range of vocabulary of social-economic,
cultural, medical and environmental issues.
