Native XML processing in C++ (BoostCon'11)
XML programming has emerged as a powerful data processing paradigm with its own rules for abstracting, partitioning, programming styles, and idioms. Seasoned XML programmers expect, and their productivity depends on the availability of languages and tools that allow usage of the patterns and practices native to the domain of XML programming. The object-oriented community, however, prefers XML data binding tools over dedicated XML languages because these tools automatically generate a statically-typed, vocabulary-specific object model from a given XML schema. Unfortunately, these tools often sidestep the expectations of seasoned XML programmers because of the difficulties in synthesizing abstractions of XML programming using purely object-oriented principles. Without clear understanding and strategy, Node error handling might be the Achilles heel of your app – its unique single-threaded execution model and loose types raise challenges that don’t exist in any other frameworks. Working on a Skyscraper in the Early Years of the XX Century
Apache CloudStack (ACS) is one of the best-of-breed in the current IaaS landscape. However, despite its high functional quality, its technical quality (the one you observe when you look "under the hood") is bellow industry average. Miguel Ferreira was initiated in ACS development in the early days of 2014 and presents, in this talk, his perspective, as a newcomer, on how it felt to him like he was working on a skyscraper in the early days of the XX century, without safety-net, nor rope. Together with his former colleague Dennis Bijlsma (SIG), they dived into the code of ACS to find evidence to support a change in the way ACS is maintained, that combines the best of modern software engineering practices and cutting-edge innovation. Miguel proposes that the ACS community take charge of keeping to the highest standards in software technical quality, while continuing to foster creativity.

This flexibility or cost-efficiency of containerized deployments allows DevOps and engineering teams to focus on and align around business value, rather than being handicapped by the legacy technology and systems. In this session we will walk the attendees through the benefits of a DevSecOps pipeline to IT, development teams, and their business leadership and show what it takes to migrate to the AKS-hosted infrastructure from an on-premise setup. We will present a reference design for an automated DevSecOps pipeline that focuses on security, quality, and speed. The session will cover the learnings from a major healthcare technology and research company that has gone through this shift and highlight the impact they experienced on the infrastructure, solution architecture, DevOps pipeline, processes and internal resources - Infrastructure: we will provide a feature overview of Azure vs AWS as it relates to a containerized Sitecore implementation, covering risks, cons, and pros associated with each and the cost estimation process for AKS. Sitecore Topology: we will cover the steps for changing Sitecore default AKS topology for maximum cost efficiency, and flexibility. DevOps pipeline: we will cover the automation that is required to move towards DevSecOps with environment creation via Infrastructure as Code, disaster recovery, and zero-downtime fully automated deployments to production. Processes and team changes: We will present how the new DevSecOps pipeline will affect internal processes and what internal support team changes are required to continue managing the new infrastructure and release pipeline.

In the past, applications where created as monolithic entities running on a single server. If this is the past for you, too, you will have experienced the downside of modern distributed and cloud applications, as debugging, troubleshooting, and monitoring is not easily accomplished with traditional approaches.
Within this session, we will explore different possibilities for collecting and analyzing the needed information to solve issues on modern distributed application and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach like debugger, log files, performance counter and third party solutions. The focus of this session will be on Developer and DevOps need, as increased release cycles and third party dependency more and more result in the need for troubleshooting also on production system, rather than in an isolated test environment.
This session requires a solid understanding of distributed applications and knowledge of SOA, but most principles also apply to and can be beneficial for more traditional application design approaches. The used code examples are in .NET but the shown principles generally apply to other languages, too, and shown software is often available for a variety of environments.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
