Non-Combustible sound
panels
Panel Built, Inc. is proud to announce the addition of three new panel types to
our product mix. All three panels serve a need requested by our customers
regarding two common specifications;
sound and fire. The first panel is
focused on sound, providing a higher
STC than our standard Value Line
panels, but utilizing the same modular
building system. Composed of
gypsum, sound board, and poly-
styrene; these panels are ideal for
noisy warehouses or back-to-back
offices where sound transference is an
issue. Panel Built, Inc. calls these
panels Standard Sound Panels, and
they are available in three standard
colors, as well as custom colors and
finishes by request.
The second panel type is a low-cost non-combustible panel designed to work
in the same modular building system as our Value Line panels. These panels
utilize a poly-isocyanurate core laminated with vinyl faced gypsum on either
side. Poly-Iso is an FM approved non-combustible material which provides a
higher R-value than poly-styrene at a relatively minimal price increase.
Available in three standard colors, these panels are ideal for machine shops
and manufacturing facilities where insurance requirements necessitate non-
combustible construction. Before deciding on traditional construction,
compare it to our Standard Non-Combustible panel building system which
achieves the same fire rating at a fraction of the cost and time.
The final panel type introduced today is our Non-Combustible Sound Panel. As
the name implies, this panel takes into account both sound and fire
specifications and provides a high STC panel with a non-combustible core.
These panels feature a pre-formed metal stud sub-frame with mineral wool
core laminated to vinyl faced gypsum on either side. Also designed to work
with our existing modular building system, these panels are available up to 12
feet tall.
As always, Panel Built’s experienced modular building experts will help you
find the best solution for your specific needs. It is always a good idea to check
with your insurance company to discover their fire rating requirements for
modular construction before purchasing. For those instances where a 1-hour
fire rating is required, Panel Built also offers a certified 1-hour system.
33
Modular Fire Wall
Classifications
Class A
 Polystyrene core with
vinyl covered gypsum
board.
 Panel is tested with an
open flame, and
measurements are
taken on fuel
contribution, smoke
developed, and flame
spread.
 Non-combustible, will
catch on fire if
exposed long enough.
 Vinyl, steel, or a
number of other kinds
of coverings.
Class C
 Vinyl covered
hardboard with
polystyrene core.
 Panel is tested with an
open flame, and
measurements are
taken on fuel
contribution, smoke
developed, and flame
spread.
 Combustible
 Not permitted for most
uses
 Panel Built only offers
class A and above.
1-Hour Fire Rated
 Mineral wool core
covered by
mechanically fastened
type-x gypsum board
 Panel wall is
constructed and is
essentially blasted with
flames for an hour
followed by a blasting
from a fire hose. Wall
must remain intact.
 Extremely fire resistant
 Covered with steel
sheeting to hide the
screw heads
There are instances where the insurance company requires more than a Class A,
but not necessarily 1-hour fire rated. For these situations, Panel Built has
developed a hybrid panel. The hybrid panel is non-combustible, with a gypsum
covered mineral wool core. Like the 1-hour panels, this requires steel studs to
provide rigidity. Unlike the 1-hour panel though, a hybrid panel does not need
screws (up to 9’ tall); instead, it can be laminated together with structural
adhesive, leaving the surface of the gypsum smooth (and consequently does not
require a steel skin saving you money).
34
HVAC Systems
35
Types of HVAC Systems
Traditional Split System HVAC’s are
most commonly associated with
residential homes. These systems are
optimal when there are multiple rooms
and hallways to cool. Ductwork can be ran
into each room, while only using one air
condenser (outside) and one air handler
(inside).
Exterior of Building:
(D) - Air Condenser
Interior of Building:
(A) - Air Return
(B) - Ductwork
(C) - Air Handler
Mini Split Systems are often used when adding HVAC
to a new room or office in an existing building. Because
there are no hallways to heat/cool, the air handler can
be located on the wall or roof of the new room without
running ductwork. These systems still operate like a
traditional split system: with an air condenser located
outside which feeds an air handler located inside the
building. These systems can be used to cool multiple
rooms. However, if there is a hallway involved, either
include an air handler for the hallway or consider
traditional split system.
BARD or Package Units are generally used for larger areas
that need a heat/cool system that can easily be transported
with the building. The system is still comprised of an air
condenser and air handler, but they are contained in the
same unit that is visible hanging on the exterior of the
building. BARD units can be used in conjunction with
ductwork to heat/cool multiple rooms with one unit. Two
important considerations when using BARD units: is there
sufficient ambient (cool) air to feed the system? where will
the condensation line drain to?
Coleman Roof Mount HVAC’s are designed to be used on RV’s.
They are often utilized on guard booths, (Like Panel Built Quick Ship
guard booths). These units are similar to BARD units, in that the air
condenser and air handler are combined into one unit - however, the
Coleman unit mounts on to the roof of the building. There is an air
diffuser on the interior ceiling which also houses the controls for the
unit unless the optional external thermostat is purchased. Because
these units have a condensation pan (which relies on evaporation)
instead of a condensation drain line, roof mounts should only be
used on flat roofs to avoid possible drippage

Mezzanine system options
Floors/Decking
Corrugated Steel Decking
One of the most common options for decking a mezzanine is to use
corrugated steel decking material covered by a layer of Advantech.
Advantech is a high quality product superior to ordinary plywood
and OSB options due to its enhanced strength, stiffness and
moisture resistance. Its advanced destiny provides a solid and
secure resistance to foot traffic, and is designed to withstand
weather conditions better than ordinary plywood. This decking
method is considered to be our most economic selection and
materials are readily available.
ResinDek
ResinDek is high density composite flooring, recommended for
mezzanines requiring a solid floor subject to heavy loads from the
use of pallet jacks, carts or dollies. This option is installed over
20g. corrugated steel decking and has a load capacity of up to
2,000 lbs PSF It has an acryseal surface which is not only skid-
resistant but also easy to clean. Available in a Gray Diamond Seal
finish, ResinDek is ideal for interior decking where heavier loads
and a more “finished” look are desired.
Diamond Plate
Heavy-duty steel tread plate (diamond plate) is generally installed
over Advantech. Advantech is mounted over corrugated steel deck
to provide greater durability with higher point load and wheel load
capacities. It also enables a quiet floor for the work environment as
opposed to having diamond plate directly over a steel deck (which
can also be a viable option if insurance requires no combustible
material be used). This decking is considered to be our second
most durable flooring.
Concrete
The most durable type of mezzanine flooring by far is concrete.
With a high point load and minimal transmission of noise through
the deck, concrete should be used in high capacity industrial and
military applications where the mezzanine is considered to be
permanent. Steel decking (corrugated steel VL decking) is provided
Steel Grating
Steel grating allows for air, light, heat, and fluids to pass through
the deck surface. It is strong, durable and virtually maintenance
free. Press-locked grating is a system of interlocking,
perpendicular bars; it provides a smooth clean look and excellent
lateral support. It exhibits the same strength, long life and
openness as welded grating. Black finish is standard with steel
grating; however, various color options and galvanized finishes are
also available.

Stair Systems
All Panel Built stair systems and
components are engineered, fabricated
and powder coated at our plant for a
lasting finish and fast delivery. Each
system is manufactured to your
specification allowing for various sizes,
heights and specialty handrails that meet
OSHA or IBC codes.
Ladders & Cage Ladders
Featuring solid steel construction and a powder
coat finish, Panel Built cage ladders are
engineered to meet OSHA specifications. Ladders
feature a flared entry for easy access and include
a steel base mounting bracket.
46
Paint vs. Powder
When it comes to finishing structural steel,
powder coating is one of the most durable
surface finishes utilized today. It is used
across a wide array of industries including
aviation, marine, and military applications.
Powder coating is a type of coating that is
applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.
The main difference between a conventional
liquid paint and a powder coating is that the
powder coating does not require a solvent to
keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid
suspension form. The coating is typically
applied electro statically and is then cured
under heat to allow it to flow and form a
"skin".
The powder coating process involves three basic steps: Part preparation or the pre-
treatment which is the removal of oil, soil, lubrication greases, metal oxides, welding
scales by mechanical process. Next is the powder application process; an electrostatic gun
is used to spray the powder onto the metal structure. The gun imparts a negative electric
charge to the powder, which is then sprayed towards the grounded object. The last step is
curing; this is when the powder is
exposed to elevated temperature, and it
begins to melt, flows out, and then
chemically reacts to form an
interconnected structure. The cure
process requires that the material reach
a temperature of 350°F for 12- 15
minutes time in order to reach full cure.
There are many advantages to using
Powder Coating vs. liquid coating. One
advantage is powder coating is highly
protective of our environment. While
liquid finishes contain solvents which
have pollutants known as volatile organic
compounds (VOC's), powder coating
contains no solvents and release
negligible amounts, if any, VOC's into the atmosphere. Therefore, there is no longer a need
for finishers to buy and maintain costly pollution control equipment. Powder coated items
generally have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and
vertically coated surfaces than liquid coated items. The coat is tough, durable, and long
lasting; has excellent hardness and abrasion resistance which in turn provides improved
product performance over most liquid coatings. Another great benefit of powder coating is
that it can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running
or sagging; giving your finished product a sleeker and smooth looking finish.
47
Structural Steel vs. Cold
Rolled Systems
Cold Rolled
Cold rolled refers to the method of bending sheet metal into “c” channel to use as the
under structure of the mezzanine floor. These cold rolled pieces attach to the tubular steel
or tapered columns and provide the “beams” that support the floor. Cold rolled has two
major benefits over structural steel mezzanines. First, the material is much lighter than
structural steel and therefore less expensive to ship. This usually means there is also less
equipment needed to erect the structure on site. Second, cold rolled steel can be pre-
galvanized; offering a substantial savings over hot dipped galvanized, stainless steel, or
aluminum mezzanines. A disadvantage of cold rolled steel mezzanine systems is the very
limited column spacing (usually 16’ max). They are also unable to reach the high live loads
or heavily concentrated point loads that can be accomplished with structural steel
mezzanine systems.
Structural Steel
Structural steel mezzanines are constructed of hot rolled structural I-beams which connect
in a post-and-beam manor to tubular columns or I-beam columns. Open web bar joists are
then used to construct the sub-floor support. While structural steel mezzanines do have a
higher dead load than cold rolled systems, they also offer major advantages. The most
commonly required benefit of structural steel is greater column spacing. Instead of the
limited 16 feet achievable with cold rolled, structural steel mezzanines can have column
spacing well over 25 feet as well as load ratings well over the standard 125 psf. This
means when using a structural steel mezzanine system, more material can be stored in a
smaller area – with more space for manoeuvrability underneath.
Both types of mezzanine systems can be
finished with wet paint or powder coated.
Cold rolled systems can be pre-
galvanized whereas structural steel must
be hot-dipped in order to become
galvanized. The last major comparison
point between the two systems is price.
Cold rolled systems will tend to cost less
(partly due to less freight cost), but offer
fewer load and span options. Conversely,
structural steel tends to cost more; but
with more span options and the
availability to add more weight as
situations arise in the future. Panel Built
offers both options in order to better
serve our customers needs. We can even design a hybrid of both systems when needed to
achieve the perfect combination of value and functionality!

How to get started
At Panel Built we do not have exclusive dealer territories, dealer
registration fees, or dealer sales quotes. Instead, we operate under the
premise that we will always be upfront and honest with our dealers and
customers; and that we want to be the preferred modular building
provider for everyone we meet. With that being said we ALWAYS cross
check leads to ensure we do not create a scenario where two dealers are
quoting our product for the same project. In instances where two dealers
bring us the same lead, we immediately connect both dealers and make
them aware of the situation. We have found this to be the most fair and
honest way to proceed while still satisfying our end-customer needs.

8 Why Modular? The trendto purchase and utilize modular building systems is increasing with no end in sight and for good reason. By pre-engineering, designing, and prefabricating in an automated controlled environment, we are able to provide you greater value over conventional construction methods with shorter lead times and much less site disturbance. What Advantage Does Modular Hold Over Conventional Construction Methods? Modular Construction Conventional Construction Pre-Designed Requires architectural time and expenditure Pre-engineered Requires engineering time and expenditure Complete detailing package: including specifications and all the components necessary to place order at no charge. Bid packages or a professional spec writer is time consuming and costly– poorly communicated pro- ject could be a disaster. Quality inspected and approved materials. Volume purchasing power for lower cost. Building materials and quality vary day to day. Increased costs due to numerous trips or additional orders for building supplies. Prefabricated to minimize an interruption of production. (Less time-Less Mess-Less Noise) Interrupted operations and increased construction time, not to mention, wet paint, sheet rock dust, debris, and noisy tools. Easily expandable system manufactured to match in appearance and to accept additions. Difficult to match existing construction after time. Added levels could require more reinforcement in structure. Relocatable by fork-lift or crane– Disassemble and reassemble– Never lose capital investment. Requires demolition resulting in debris removal and higher reconstruction costs. Longer construction time. Longer lifetime of material such as steel, alumi- num, etc, for more exact fits and tolerances Construction Materials have a distinctively shorter lifetime than materials used in Modular construction. 7 year Tax Depreciation 33 year Tax Depreciation Single Source A reliable contractor or multiple trades must be located and coordinated for each project. Interchangeable panels, doors, windows and oth- er parts. Contractors rarely use the same materials projet to project. Fast, easy, and cost effective installation. Environmental delays, plant down-time, union labor etc. Can add costs to the project.

32 Non-Combustible sound panels Panel Built,Inc. is proud to announce the addition of three new panel types to our product mix. All three panels serve a need requested by our customers regarding two common specifications; sound and fire. The first panel is focused on sound, providing a higher STC than our standard Value Line panels, but utilizing the same modular building system. Composed of gypsum, sound board, and poly- styrene; these panels are ideal for noisy warehouses or back-to-back offices where sound transference is an issue. Panel Built, Inc. calls these panels Standard Sound Panels, and they are available in three standard colors, as well as custom colors and finishes by request. The second panel type is a low-cost non-combustible panel designed to work in the same modular building system as our Value Line panels. These panels utilize a poly-isocyanurate core laminated with vinyl faced gypsum on either side. Poly-Iso is an FM approved non-combustible material which provides a higher R-value than poly-styrene at a relatively minimal price increase. Available in three standard colors, these panels are ideal for machine shops and manufacturing facilities where insurance requirements necessitate non- combustible construction. Before deciding on traditional construction, compare it to our Standard Non-Combustible panel building system which achieves the same fire rating at a fraction of the cost and time. The final panel type introduced today is our Non-Combustible Sound Panel. As the name implies, this panel takes into account both sound and fire specifications and provides a high STC panel with a non-combustible core. These panels feature a pre-formed metal stud sub-frame with mineral wool core laminated to vinyl faced gypsum on either side. Also designed to work with our existing modular building system, these panels are available up to 12 feet tall. As always, Panel Built’s experienced modular building experts will help you find the best solution for your specific needs. It is always a good idea to check with your insurance company to discover their fire rating requirements for modular construction before purchasing. For those instances where a 1-hour fire rating is required, Panel Built also offers a certified 1-hour system.
  • 33.
33 Modular Fire Wall Classifications ClassA  Polystyrene core with vinyl covered gypsum board.  Panel is tested with an open flame, and measurements are taken on fuel contribution, smoke developed, and flame spread.  Non-combustible, will catch on fire if exposed long enough.  Vinyl, steel, or a number of other kinds of coverings. Class C  Vinyl covered hardboard with polystyrene core.  Panel is tested with an open flame, and measurements are taken on fuel contribution, smoke developed, and flame spread.  Combustible  Not permitted for most uses  Panel Built only offers class A and above. 1-Hour Fire Rated  Mineral wool core covered by mechanically fastened type-x gypsum board  Panel wall is constructed and is essentially blasted with flames for an hour followed by a blasting from a fire hose. Wall must remain intact.  Extremely fire resistant  Covered with steel sheeting to hide the screw heads There are instances where the insurance company requires more than a Class A, but not necessarily 1-hour fire rated. For these situations, Panel Built has developed a hybrid panel. The hybrid panel is non-combustible, with a gypsum covered mineral wool core. Like the 1-hour panels, this requires steel studs to provide rigidity. Unlike the 1-hour panel though, a hybrid panel does not need screws (up to 9’ tall); instead, it can be laminated together with structural adhesive, leaving the surface of the gypsum smooth (and consequently does not require a steel skin saving you money).

35 Types of HVACSystems Traditional Split System HVAC’s are most commonly associated with residential homes. These systems are optimal when there are multiple rooms and hallways to cool. Ductwork can be ran into each room, while only using one air condenser (outside) and one air handler (inside). Exterior of Building: (D) - Air Condenser Interior of Building: (A) - Air Return (B) - Ductwork (C) - Air Handler Mini Split Systems are often used when adding HVAC to a new room or office in an existing building. Because there are no hallways to heat/cool, the air handler can be located on the wall or roof of the new room without running ductwork. These systems still operate like a traditional split system: with an air condenser located outside which feeds an air handler located inside the building. These systems can be used to cool multiple rooms. However, if there is a hallway involved, either include an air handler for the hallway or consider traditional split system. BARD or Package Units are generally used for larger areas that need a heat/cool system that can easily be transported with the building. The system is still comprised of an air condenser and air handler, but they are contained in the same unit that is visible hanging on the exterior of the building. BARD units can be used in conjunction with ductwork to heat/cool multiple rooms with one unit. Two important considerations when using BARD units: is there sufficient ambient (cool) air to feed the system? where will the condensation line drain to? Coleman Roof Mount HVAC’s are designed to be used on RV’s. They are often utilized on guard booths, (Like Panel Built Quick Ship guard booths). These units are similar to BARD units, in that the air condenser and air handler are combined into one unit - however, the Coleman unit mounts on to the roof of the building. There is an air diffuser on the interior ceiling which also houses the controls for the unit unless the optional external thermostat is purchased. Because these units have a condensation pan (which relies on evaporation) instead of a condensation drain line, roof mounts should only be used on flat roofs to avoid possible drippage

44 Mezzanine system options Floors/Decking CorrugatedSteel Decking One of the most common options for decking a mezzanine is to use corrugated steel decking material covered by a layer of Advantech. Advantech is a high quality product superior to ordinary plywood and OSB options due to its enhanced strength, stiffness and moisture resistance. Its advanced destiny provides a solid and secure resistance to foot traffic, and is designed to withstand weather conditions better than ordinary plywood. This decking method is considered to be our most economic selection and materials are readily available. ResinDek ResinDek is high density composite flooring, recommended for mezzanines requiring a solid floor subject to heavy loads from the use of pallet jacks, carts or dollies. This option is installed over 20g. corrugated steel decking and has a load capacity of up to 2,000 lbs PSF It has an acryseal surface which is not only skid- resistant but also easy to clean. Available in a Gray Diamond Seal finish, ResinDek is ideal for interior decking where heavier loads and a more “finished” look are desired. Diamond Plate Heavy-duty steel tread plate (diamond plate) is generally installed over Advantech. Advantech is mounted over corrugated steel deck to provide greater durability with higher point load and wheel load capacities. It also enables a quiet floor for the work environment as opposed to having diamond plate directly over a steel deck (which can also be a viable option if insurance requires no combustible material be used). This decking is considered to be our second most durable flooring. Concrete The most durable type of mezzanine flooring by far is concrete. With a high point load and minimal transmission of noise through the deck, concrete should be used in high capacity industrial and military applications where the mezzanine is considered to be permanent. Steel decking (corrugated steel VL decking) is provided Steel Grating Steel grating allows for air, light, heat, and fluids to pass through the deck surface. It is strong, durable and virtually maintenance free. Press-locked grating is a system of interlocking, perpendicular bars; it provides a smooth clean look and excellent lateral support. It exhibits the same strength, long life and openness as welded grating. Black finish is standard with steel grating; however, various color options and galvanized finishes are also available.

46 Paint vs. Powder Whenit comes to finishing structural steel, powder coating is one of the most durable surface finishes utilized today. It is used across a wide array of industries including aviation, marine, and military applications. Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electro statically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". The powder coating process involves three basic steps: Part preparation or the pre- treatment which is the removal of oil, soil, lubrication greases, metal oxides, welding scales by mechanical process. Next is the powder application process; an electrostatic gun is used to spray the powder onto the metal structure. The gun imparts a negative electric charge to the powder, which is then sprayed towards the grounded object. The last step is curing; this is when the powder is exposed to elevated temperature, and it begins to melt, flows out, and then chemically reacts to form an interconnected structure. The cure process requires that the material reach a temperature of 350°F for 12- 15 minutes time in order to reach full cure. There are many advantages to using Powder Coating vs. liquid coating. One advantage is powder coating is highly protective of our environment. While liquid finishes contain solvents which have pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC's), powder coating contains no solvents and release negligible amounts, if any, VOC's into the atmosphere. Therefore, there is no longer a need for finishers to buy and maintain costly pollution control equipment. Powder coated items generally have fewer appearance differences between horizontally coated surfaces and vertically coated surfaces than liquid coated items. The coat is tough, durable, and long lasting; has excellent hardness and abrasion resistance which in turn provides improved product performance over most liquid coatings. Another great benefit of powder coating is that it can produce much thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging; giving your finished product a sleeker and smooth looking finish.

47 Structural Steel vs.Cold Rolled Systems Cold Rolled Cold rolled refers to the method of bending sheet metal into “c” channel to use as the under structure of the mezzanine floor. These cold rolled pieces attach to the tubular steel or tapered columns and provide the “beams” that support the floor. Cold rolled has two major benefits over structural steel mezzanines. First, the material is much lighter than structural steel and therefore less expensive to ship. This usually means there is also less equipment needed to erect the structure on site. Second, cold rolled steel can be pre- galvanized; offering a substantial savings over hot dipped galvanized, stainless steel, or aluminum mezzanines. A disadvantage of cold rolled steel mezzanine systems is the very limited column spacing (usually 16’ max). They are also unable to reach the high live loads or heavily concentrated point loads that can be accomplished with structural steel mezzanine systems. Structural Steel Structural steel mezzanines are constructed of hot rolled structural I-beams which connect in a post-and-beam manor to tubular columns or I-beam columns. Open web bar joists are then used to construct the sub-floor support. While structural steel mezzanines do have a higher dead load than cold rolled systems, they also offer major advantages. The most commonly required benefit of structural steel is greater column spacing. Instead of the limited 16 feet achievable with cold rolled, structural steel mezzanines can have column spacing well over 25 feet as well as load ratings well over the standard 125 psf. This means when using a structural steel mezzanine system, more material can be stored in a smaller area – with more space for manoeuvrability underneath. Both types of mezzanine systems can be finished with wet paint or powder coated. Cold rolled systems can be pre- galvanized whereas structural steel must be hot-dipped in order to become galvanized. The last major comparison point between the two systems is price. Cold rolled systems will tend to cost less (partly due to less freight cost), but offer fewer load and span options. Conversely, structural steel tends to cost more; but with more span options and the availability to add more weight as situations arise in the future. Panel Built offers both options in order to better serve our customers needs. We can even design a hybrid of both systems when needed to achieve the perfect combination of value and functionality!

67 How to getstarted At Panel Built we do not have exclusive dealer territories, dealer registration fees, or dealer sales quotes. Instead, we operate under the premise that we will always be upfront and honest with our dealers and customers; and that we want to be the preferred modular building provider for everyone we meet. With that being said we ALWAYS cross check leads to ensure we do not create a scenario where two dealers are quoting our product for the same project. In instances where two dealers bring us the same lead, we immediately connect both dealers and make them aware of the situation. We have found this to be the most fair and honest way to proceed while still satisfying our end-customer needs.
