Yellowstone National Park is located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho and is home to the largest collection of geysers, hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles in the world. It was established as the first national park in 1872 to protect its geothermal features. Yellowstone has over 200 geysers including Old Faithful, which erupts regularly, as well as over 10,000 hot springs. The park also protects forests, lakes, canyons and a wide variety of wildlife including bears, wolves, bison and elk. Fires in 1988 burned over 1.4 million acres in and around Yellowstone, but the park has since recovered.
