This document provides instructions for a cultural anthropology interview assignment. Students are asked to conduct a 30-45 minute interview with someone from a different ethnic group or non-U.S. citizen. The interview should explore topics like travel, food, language, family, concepts of time, and economics. Students should ask the interviewee questions about what has surprised them most about the interviewer's culture, how they have been misunderstood by that culture, embarrassing cross-cultural incidents, greatest disappointments, advice for cross-cultural experiences, and how life has been enriched by cross-cultural experiences. The report can be in a question and answer format or as a magazine/newspaper article.

1. Cultural Anthropology Interview Assignment
Interview: Conduct an extended interview (30-45 minutes) with a
non-U.S. citizen or at least someone from a different ethnic group
from yours. You may explore issues such travel, food, language,
family, concepts of time and economics. You can also ask such
questions as:
P What has the interviewee been most surprised about your
(interviewer) culture?
P How does the interviewee think he or she has been most
misunderstood by members of your (interviewer) culture?
P A humorous or embarrassing incident involving either the
target language or culture
P Greatest cross-cultural disappointment or disillusionment
P Most important advice they would give to people headed for
cross-cultural service
P Specific ways life has been richer because of cross-cultural
experience
Your report can be written up as questions-and-answers (if so, you’ll
likely need to go beyond these six questions) or it can be done like a
newspaper or magazine article.
