This document provides instructions for interpreting maps by having students answer questions about key map elements such as the title, compass rose, date, publisher, legend, scale, index, grid system, and use of colors. Students are asked to analyze sample maps and identify these elements in separate responses, for example noting what is located northwest or southwest on the map according to the compass rose.

1. Interpreting Maps
Directions: Using the maps provided identify the following elements of a map.
Answer the following questions for each map, use a separate sheet a paper.
• What is the title of the map?
• Does this map have a compass rose? If so, give one example using it.
eg: ____ is NW of _____, in the SW they grow wheat.
• If there is a date on the map, what is it?
• What person or organization developed and published this map?
• Does this map have a legend? If so, what does the legend tell you?
• Is there a scale for this map? If so, what is the distance measured?
• Does this map have an index? If so, what information does it provide?
• Does this map have a grid system? If so, what type?
• Are colors used on this map? If so, what do they represent?
