THIS PROJECT INVOLVED THE 4 STORY BUILDING AT 800 UNIVERSI-
TY BAY DRIVE IN MADISON, WI THAT AMHERST CHOSE TO OCCUPY
THE TOP 3 FLOORS OF. THE PROGRAMMING PART OF THE PROJECT FO-
CUSED ON ALL 3 OF AMHERST’S FLOORS. THE INTERIOR DESIGN IS OF THE
MAIN ENTRY FLOOR OF THE BUSINESS, WHICH INCLUDES THE RECEPTION
AREA, MAJOR CONFERENCE ROOMS AND DESIGN TEAM WORK AREAS.
12. MADISONMEDICALSPA
THE MADISON MEDICAL SPA IS A NONSURGICAL
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER. THE PROJ-
ECT WAS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT, WHERE I PRI-
MARILY FOCUSED ON THE SPACE PLAN, FURNITURE
AND MATERIAL SELECTION, AND THE RENDERING
OF THE FLOOR PLAN. IT IS DESIGNED TO MAKE CLI-
ENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE AND AT EASE BEFORE
AND AFTER THEY MAY HAVE HAD A TREATMENT. IT IS
STYLED IN A TUSCAN MANOR WITH A MODERN TWIST.

KLEIN ADDITION: A COUPLE IN THERE 50’S ADDED A HOME OFFICE / STUDIO SPACE TO THEIR
PENTHOUSE CONDO IN MIAMI BEACH, FL. THE WIFE IS A MID-CENTURY DESIGN COLLEC-
TOR / DEALER AND THE HUSBAND IS A PHOTOGRAPHER. THE SPACE IS MEANT TO FUNCTION AS
AN ENTERTAINMENT AREA, OFFICE, GALLERY, AND LOUNGE WITH A 1950’S TO 1970’S RETRO
LOOK. THIS WAS A DESIGN SOLUTION COMPLETELY DONE IN AUTOCAD. THE FURNITURE, COL-
LECTABLES, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND THE SPACE ITSELF ARE CUSTOM DESIGNED FOR THE CLIENT.

IT IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF COLLECTOR
PIECES THE KLEIN WIFE MIGHT HAVE. IT IS A GOOD
EXAMPLE OF CONCEPT TO REALISTIC DESIGN.
22. BREITENBACHGROCERY
VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH STUDY
THE HISTORICAL BREITENBACH GROCERY IS LOCATED AT 831 WILLIAMSON STREET IN MADISON,
WISCONSIN. THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING IS THE TYPICAL TWO STORY FALSE FRONT FOUND ON
MANY BUSINESSES OF THE TIME. THE ORIGINAL BUILDING WAS BUILT WITH OF WOOD FRAME
CONSTRUCTION AND A STONE FOUNDATION. THE EXTERIOR IS FACED WITH A BRICK FAÇADE WITH
THE INTERIOR WALLS COVERED WITH A STUCCO FINISH. THE ROOF IS A FRONT GABLE
FORM WITH ASPHALT SHINGLES. THE BUILDING IS A RECTANGULAR PLAN,
THREE BAYS WIDE, TWO STORIES HIGH, AND IT WAS ORIGINALLY ONE PILE DEEP.
DURING MY RESEARCH, I CREATED A NARRATIVE OF THE BUILDING USING HISTORICAL EVIDENCE, SUCH
AS: BUILDING PERMITS, CITY DIRECTORIES, AND INTERVIEWS WITH THE CURRENT OWNER. THE RESEARCH
INCLUDED WHO LIVED AND WORKED THERE, AS WELL AS, HOW THE BUILDING CHANGED OVER TIME.
THE RESEARCH I COMPLETED FOR THIS BUILDING WAS IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2012 VERNACULAR
ARCHITECTURAL FORUM ANNUAL CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN MADISON. 831 WILLIAMSON STREET
WILL BE A STOP ON THE ANNUAL CONFERENCES VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE TOUR OF MADISON.

DIVISION OF STATE FACILITIES – FACILITY DESIGN INTERNSHIP
THE ARCHITECTURAL VERIFICATION PROJECT THAT I WORKED ON FOR THE STATE INVOLVED ME TRAVEL-
ING TO ALL THE STATE OWNED BUILDINGS AND VERIFYING THAT THE STATE’S AUTOCAD FILES ARE CUR-
RENT WITH THE ACTUAL BUILDING. I WOULD WALK THROUGH THE BUILDING WITH A HARD COPY OF THE
FLOOR PLANS OF EACH FLOOR AND GO FROM ROOM TO ROOM VERIFYING EVERYTHING FROM WALLS TO
SYSTEM FURNITURE. THEN I WOULD RETURN TO MY OFFICE AND UPDATE ANY CHANGES IN THE AUTOCAD
FILES. I ALSO WAS IN CHARGE OF ORGANIZING THEIR FILES IN THE DATABASE SO THEY WERE EASY FOR
ALL STATE EMPLOYEES TO ACCESS. THIS WAS DIFFICULT IN SOME CASES BECAUSE THE X-REFS FROM AU-
TOCAD DO NOT FOLLOW WHEN MOVING FILES AROUND SO I HAD TO GO INTO EACH AUTOCAD FILE AND
UPDATE ALL THE X-REFS AS WELL. IN ALL, I COMPLETED THE UPDATE OF ALL, OVER THIRTY, STATE OWNED
BUILDING DURING THE SUMMER OF 2009.
