INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNCATION
Intercultural
communication is
communication between
people with different cultural
identities.
What is Intercultural
Communication?
It also involves
understanding the different
cultures, languages and
customs of people from
other countries.
What is Intercultural
Communication?
Social science
approach:
This model focuses on observing the behavior of
a person from a different culture in order to
describe it and compare it with other cultures.
Interpretive
approach:
This theory focuses on accumulating knowledge
about a culture through communication in the
form of shared stories based on subjective,
individual experiences.
Dialectical
approach:
A dialectical approach helps us think about
culture and intercultural communication in
complex ways, so we can avoid categorizing
everything in either-or dichotomies by adopting a
broader approach and acknowledging the
tensions that must be negotiated.
Critical
approach:
This approach examines cultures according to
their differences compared to the researcher’s
own culture and, in particular, how these cultures
are portrayed in the media.
Interacting with people of different

Power Distance: This dimension displays how a culture
handles inequality, particularly in relation
to money and power.
Individualism vs.
Collectivism:
This dimension focuses on the
unification of culture.
Masculinity vs.
Femininity:
In this dimension, a culture is measured on a
scale of masculinity versus femininity, which
represents a culture’s preferences for
achievement, competition, and materialism vs.
preferences for teamwork, harmony, and
empathy.
Uncertainty
Avoidance:
cultures are gauged on their response to
uncertainty and ambiguity and new ideas and
situations.
Long-Term
Orientation vs.
Short-Term
Orientation
A culture that scores high in long-term
orientation will often put emphasis on traditions
and customs, and will view change as a negative.
Short-term cultures are much more accepting
on change, seeing it as inevitable.
Indulgence vs.
Restraint
In the final dimension, all cultures acknowledge
that the natural human response in life is the
urgent need to gratify desires.
