What is a Pulsed Light Photofacial?
The Palomar IPL Photofacial offers comfortable and effective treatment of sun damage and visible veins.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
People with:
•
Sun damage — Wide areas of pigmentation on the face, chest and arms.
•
Sunspots — Individual pigmented lesions, also known as age spots.
•
Rosacea — General inflammation of the cheeks and face.
•
Spider veins — Individual vessels, which can be red, blue or purple in color.
•
Angiomas — individual small red or purple spots
What are the intended results?
•
Sun damage/sun spots — The sunspots will darken after treatment and be naturally shed from the
skin within one to two weeks.
•
Rosacea — Skin tone will be more normal, with less pronounced redness within one week after
treatment.
•
Spider veins — Vessels may disappear after treatment or they may appear darker and then fully or
partially fade within 10-14 days.
•
Angiomas — Spots may disappear after treatment or they may appear darker and then fully or
partially fade within 10-14 days.
Typically, several treatments will be necessary to completely clear sunspots, rosacea and vessels.
How IPL Photofacial and Skin Rejuvenation Works
Palomar® offers skin care lasers and pulsed light devices that deliver energy to target and destroy
vascular and pigmented lesions associated with spider veins, reticular veins, rosacea, telangiectasias,
hemangiomas, sun damage, age spots, dyschromia, melasma, poikiloderma, and angiomas from hands,
legs, chest, arms and face.
Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the
skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response. These
optimal wavelengths of light clear vascular and pigmented lesions by targeting the chromophores of
hemoglobin (for vascular lesions) and melanin (for pigmented lesions). These damaged lesions are then
cleared by the body, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin. Pigmented lesions undergo a
mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days, while the vascular lesions blanch and then
resolve within 10 to 14 days.

2. What is the procedure?
The treatment provider will move the hand piece over the patient’s skin, pulsing it continuously. Each
pulse will send a beam of light through the skin. A flashing light, an audible tone and a mild sensation on
the skin will let the patient know when the hand piece is being pulsed.
What is the healing process?
Immediately after treatment, patients can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by
some minor swelling. This usually lasts two to 24 hours, and can be soothed with cold gel or ice packs.
