4. TERMINOLOGY There are many medical terms that refer to the skin and skin conditions We make these words by using a root word with a combining form and a suffix

5. DERMAT/O (means skin) Dermat/o plus logist = dermatologist one who studies the skin Dermat/o plus plasty = dermatoplasty surgical repair to the skin Dermat/o plus itis = dermatitis inflammation of the skin

6. MELAN/O (means black) Melan/o plus cyte = melanocyte special cells in the basal layer of the epidermis Melan/o plus oma = melanoma skin cancer caused by overgrowth of melanin in a melanocyte

7. -DERMA (suffix meaning skin) Scler/o plus –derma = scleroderma disorder in which skin becomes taut, thick, and leatherlike Leuk/o plus – derma = leukoderma disappearance of skin pigment causing milk-white patches Ichthy/o plus –derma = ichthyoderma dry and scaly skin condition
