Arundhati Roy is an Indian author and activist best known for her novel The God of Small Things, which won the Booker Prize in 1997. She was born in 1961 in Shillong, India to parents from different religious backgrounds. Roy studied architecture but began writing her acclaimed novel in 1992, completing it in 1996. In addition to writing, she is involved in environmental and human rights causes and has advocated on issues including Kashmiri separatism, nuclear weapons, and criticism of government policies. She has received several awards for her writing and social activism.
