The Professional and Leadership Development Project

Recently, I conducted a survey among a small US-based sample of members of a global
women’s engineering community. I wanted to explore women engineer’s attitudes and behaviors
about leadership. I was hoping to discover ways to promote women engineers’ leadership in
corporate and entrepreneurial environments.
100% of respondents were women. Respondents were based in California, Colorado, Florida,
Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Texas,
Utah, and Washington.
Most of the respondents were in the 30-39 age category.
The respondents varied in the amount of work experience they had (63% of the women were
employed full-time).

94% of respondents were college educated and 27% had graduate-level degrees.
70% of respondents had no experience on a founding team of any kind of organization.
62% of respondents had initiated at least one major project in their careers.

In terms of leadership attitudes and behaviors, 100% of respondents believed that others could
benefit from their knowledge.
28% of respondents believed that leaders must demonstrate exceptional skill.
97% of respondents believed that leadership is skill that is developed with practice.

leadership skills.
100% of respondents were willing to try new leadership behaviors
Nearly 90% of respondents were willing to construct a leadership development plan.

63% of respondents have identified a specific leadership goal that they would like to pursue.
70% of respondents can explain their leadership goals to others.
75% of respondents have not designed a leadership plan for themselves in the past year.

81% of respondents believe they are aware of their strengths and weaknesses with regard to
leadership capabilities.
84% of respondents are comfortable mentoring others.

Initial Findings from Survey on Leadership Development in a Women's Engineering Community in the U.S.
