Many of our lives have been touched by cancer in some way. We may know someone or have heard a
story that has been etched into our minds. Though the knowledge of anyone's illness can be
potentially devastating, none may be as traumatic as when a life-threatening illness touches the life
of a child.
As a parent, John thinks about where he would take his child if cancer arose, and he is inspired by
what St. Jude's accomplishes. He says, "It is a miraculous place not only for the patients they treat
but for the research they do." In John's artwork challenge as Project Manager on Apprentice he
raised over $626,000 for St. Jude. In last week's episode he added another $50,000 to the tally. If
Rich can win this season of The Celebrity Apprentice, he will be adding not only what he raises
during the task, but a prize of $250,000 as well. John Rich also has released a single called "For the
Kids," and the proceeds of the sale of the song on iTunes will also go to St. Jude.
Later that afternoon, I had the opportunity to visit the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). While
doing rounds, I saw my little friend waking up from her anesthesia. She was only whimpering. She
wasn't crying or screaming like the other children were. Her parents jumped to her side and started
stroking her head and held her hand. They immediately comforted her using touch therapy. The
techniques had become part of their tool chest, and were the first method they used to soothe her.
There are two great ways to help others while staying active, both on Saturday at 9 a.m. Many will
run or walk at Peaks View Park to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer in the Hope for
Tomorrow 5K.
I could spend the rest of this article quoting statistics, but instead I would rather share a short story
about care that makes a difference to all those involved in this heart wrenching situation. An
anecdotal benefit, as it is not easy to measure the benefit felt in the heart. There are no measures of
cortisol level, or pain assessment before and after the session. The findings are those which are
expressed by the child, parent and their caregivers.
The entire family will have fun and learn about local history at the 2nd Annual Pierce Street Harlem
Renaissance Festival. The event will be held at 1301 Pierce Street from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
You might not have money to give, but maybe people you know do. There are charity walks for every
cause you can imagine. Find one that is close to your heart and participate. Not only will you raise
money, but you'll also get a bit of exercise in the process.
