PopularityIn The UK !
According to recent statistics the once
popular Chinese and Italian takeaways
have been overtaken in number by the
now well loved Indian meal.
Since the commonly referred to “curry
industry” has continually increased,
producing Indian dishes that cater to
the British taste.
This follows the crowning of the dish
“chicken tikka masala” as national dish
of the UK.
It is now said that curry restaurants,
(which is now a well worn term for mid
to high-end Indian restaurants,
Curry houses, Bangladeshi style, and
Pakistani kebab shops) in Great Britain
alone, are estimated to serve in the
region of two and a half million
customers every week!
Even if we disregard any other statistics
and consider the details from London
alone, it is now known that there are
more Indian restaurants in London than
if the figures from Mumbai and Delhi
are added together!
Approximately in the region of forty
three million portions of chicken tikka
masala are served, across Great Britain,
on an annual basis.
The Indian food industry of today in Great
Britain can lay claim to eighty thousand
employees at well over ten thousand
restaurants resulting in an annual turnover of
three and a half billion pounds, and on those
figures is a very important slice of the economy
in the United Kingdom!
To use the dish “chicken tikka masala” once
again, at a conservative estimate, we consume
a staggering eighteen tonnes on a weekly basis,
all served up by the fifteen thousand Indian
restaurants spread across Great Britain.
