CHALLENGES IN THE ARCHAIC MODEL
Example 1 -
Dhruv is a student of class 10th, studying in a CBSE curriculum. He is
intrigued by the idea of Cryptocurrency, and wants to make a career in
Data Mining. He reads up on all the latest news related to Bitcoin,
which he finds particularly fascinating. His parents are encouraging
him to take up science and mathematics in class 11th, so that he can
become a data miner. Even though Dhruv feels happy that his parents
are supportive of his choices, he is not very keen on taking up science.
Chemistry and Physics are not his cup of tea, but his love for
mathematics cannot be denied too.
As a career counsellor, what suggestions would you make? What
career options can Dhruv look for in the domain of Cryptocurrency if
not a Blockchain Developer?

Example 2 -
Sunaina is a student of class 12th, studying the IB Diploma. Her
subjects include a combination of Spanish, Business Management,
Mathematics, Biology, Theatre, and the IB Core. She initially took these
subjects because she was interested to take up Management as a
career, and had a little bit of interest in Biology and Wildlife too. After
a visit to Africa last year, she was so taken with Wildlife that she
decided to apply for a short internship at the Wildlife Conservation
Trust, India. Now, after her stint, she feels confident that Wildlife
Conservation is her true calling. She knows it is a science oriented
programme in India, and only a few universities will accept her into a
life sciences program with her current subjects.
She has decided to apply to the University of Florida, USA and
University of Wellington, New Zealand because she is determined to
make this work. She would have loved to stay in India with her
parents, but she is aware that Wildlife may not be a possibility...

Example 3 -
Varun is a student of class 11th, and loves History and Political Science.
He has been quite fascinated with the idea of Civil Services and
International Relations. He has been a regular to MUNs, and loves to
participate in quizzes as well as debating competitions at school.
He wanted to take up Humanities after class 10th, but his school did
not offer humanities, and his parents were keen on him studying
science up till class 12th. They believed that it would be good for his
analytical thinking. Now with subjects like Physics and Mathematics,
and going to the tuitions, he does not have much time to participate in
extracurricular activities. He does read the newspaper everyday
though, to keep up with the latest events.
He has told his parents that he would be taking up a Political Science
course in college, or maybe liberal arts. But was this the right
approach? Where did we go wrong?

With the changing
career landscape, and
eclectic career options
emerging quickly, the
traditional segregation
of careers into sciences,
commerce, and
humanities is becoming
obsolete.
Many new-age and
emerging careers can be
better understood when
placed into the newer
domains rather than the
traditional ones, since
they would overlap in
the traditional method.
The domain wise
approach offers greater
flexibility to students to
choose subjects and
careers, what with the
growth of curriculums
such as the International
Baccalaureate, and the
Cambridge International
in the country.
It is a more holistic
approach, that does not
categorize students into
only three areas, rather
aims to create a mindset
that focuses on students
getting to know about
real-life work mapping.
