Nehemiah hears from his brother that the Jews who returned to Jerusalem after exile are in great trouble. Their wall is torn down and gates destroyed. This news causes Nehemiah to sit and weep for days, fasting and praying to God. He acknowledges to God that the exile was due to their unfaithfulness but asks God to have mercy according to His promise to return them if they repent and obey His commands.
