The document summarizes a keynote address given by Colleen Chien comparing patent quality mechanisms between the United States and European patent systems. It finds that the US system receives many more patent applications, has a higher grant rate, but a much lower renewal rate than the European system. This results in over 10 times as many US patents remaining in force compared to equivalent European patents. The differences are driven by factors like examination practices, applicant incentives, and relative costs of obtaining and maintaining patents between the two systems. Chien proposes designing patent system mechanisms that better distinguish between patents that are likely to be enforced from those intended only for defensive purposes.

The document describes a proposed database called IPRoduct that would link intellectual property (IP) data like patents to product data. This would allow researchers to study the "real impact" of innovations by observing them at the point they reach consumers. The database is being developed by collecting information companies provide online linking patents to products. An initial database includes data on 1,000 products, 3,000 patents, and 30 companies. Preliminary analysis of the data provides stylized facts and shows the database could have policy relevance by better understanding the economic impact of IP and providing new innovation indicators.

Session 7 b commentson daneilkerpaperonukr&d servicelives2014iariw[1]IARIW 2014
This document summarizes Wendy Li's comments on Daniel Ker's paper comparing survey and patent-based approaches to estimating the service lives of R&D assets. It outlines two main methods - a UK survey of firms and analysis of UK patent renewal data. The survey had response rates around 43% while the patent analysis matched 35% of patents to businesses. Results showed median lives ranging from 5 to 10 years across industries. Li comments that both approaches have limitations but the survey provides direct estimates while the patent method avoids issues of unknown skewed distributions.
Patent counts and statistics have for a long time been regarded as one of the main indicators of technical innovation and progress lead by such innovation.

Legal and moral debates around Artificial Intelligence (AI)Tarun Khurana
This document discusses legal and moral debates around artificial intelligence. On legal issues, it examines liability, intellectual property rights, data protection, and jurisdiction questions raised by AI. For liability, it notes that neither international nor Indian law recognizes AI as a subject, so the entity that programmed the AI would be responsible. On IPR, it raises whether an AI could be a joint or sole owner of copyrights or patents. Regarding data protection, it notes that AIs require large amounts of data to improve, but protecting this data from misuse is an open question. On jurisdiction, it discusses challenges in determining the proper legal forum when an AI's actions span multiple countries. For moral debates, it examines problems of reliability, biased decision
The document provides an overview of Lithography-Based Ceramic Manufacturing (LCM) as an additive manufacturing technique for ceramics. LCM uses a photosensitive resin containing ceramic particles that is solidified layer-by-layer using light to produce a "green body" ceramic object. The green body undergoes post-processing steps of debinding and sintering to remove the polymer binder and fuse the ceramic particles, resulting in a fully dense ceramic part with mechanical properties equivalent to conventionally manufactured ceramic components. Key advantages of LCM include the ability to produce complex ceramic geometries without limitations and in a more efficient manner than traditional ceramic fabrication methods.
1. The document discusses new chemical entities (NCEs) and aspects of drafting and prosecuting patents for NCEs in India.
2. It provides an overview of patentable subject matter for NCEs, challenges with Markush claims, and case studies comparing prosecution of related patents in India, the US and Europe.
3. The case studies analyze allowed claims and references cited during prosecution, finding that scopes of protection and references cited tended to be more similar between Indian and European patents compared to corresponding US patents.
The document discusses ex-parte interim injunction orders passed by Indian courts and whether they follow guidelines from the Supreme Court of India on such orders. It notes that obtaining ex-parte orders can create havoc for defendants and be difficult to vacate. While the Supreme Court laid down principles to curb misuse, some courts still tend to pass ex-parte orders without properly applying the law or considering principles of natural justice. The document analyzes some cases where ex-parte orders were passed without following guidelines. It questions whether courts sufficiently consider merits before granting such drastic relief.
This document discusses innovation and provides information on how to encourage innovation. It defines innovation, explains why innovation is important, what types of innovations companies may want, and lists some of the most innovative companies. It then discusses Apple's history of innovation in detail, from its early successes to challenges and return to profitability under Jobs' leadership. The document emphasizes that Apple has continued to innovate through new products and patents to stay on top. It also discusses how to identify opportunities for innovation and evaluate technologies to prioritize innovation efforts.

3. Introduction- Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF)
What is PEF?
• PEF is a 100% recyclable bio-based polymer derived from plants having the potential to replace
the plastic industry’s giant polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a durable material derived
from conventional resources.
• It can be referred as the next generation polyester,
having better mechanical and barrier properties than
the current biggest selling polyester (PET).
PEF V/S PET
1) PEF has very good barrier properties (hard to achieve with most bio-based polymers)
• O2 barrier – 6 times greater than PET
• CO2 barrier – 3 times better than PET
• H2O barrier – 2 times better than PET
2) Better tensile strength
3) PEF requires less additives than PET

For sources of information, please refer to Appendix 1
4. Introduction- Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF)
4) PEF also has interesting mechanical properties compared to PET.
• Higher Tg (glass transition temperature)
• Lower Tm (melting point)
• Higher modulus
5) PEF can be recycled and incorporated into the PET recycle streams at up to 5% PEF with no
affect on the recycled PET performance.
6) Permits greater light weighting and superior thermal stability without heat-setting (can be hot filled
at about 200-deg F).
Applications of PEF
• PEF Bottles- Water bottle, beverage bottle etc
• PEF Fibers- Apparels, carpets, home furnishing, disposables commodities, fabrics, diapers, filters
and industrial fibres
• PEF Films

Patent Searching | Research and Analytics | Patent Prosecution/Preparation Support | Litigation and E-Discovery | IP Valuation | Patent Portfolio Watch
• Avantium developed and patented YXY technology platform aimed at manufacturing bio fuels, bio based
plastics and bio chemicals.
• Avantium established strategic partnership with Danone, Coca-Cola and ALPLA for developing and
commercializing bio-based polymers derived from PEF.
• In 2014, Avantium, Danone, Swire Pacific and Coca-Cola signed a consortium of USD 50 million
investments aimed at developing and commercializing the alternative to PET for packaging applications.
• In 2014, Avantium demonstrated the application of PEF for manufacturing of fibers to make 100% bio
based t-shirts for textile manufacturers.
• Asia Pacific is likely to be a lucrative market in the near future on account of growing packaging industry in
India and China in vague of positive outlook on food & beverage, consumer goods and pharmaceutical
sectors.
• North America is likely to be promising market for bio based chemicals in light of increasing environmental
concerns towards reducing GHG emissions coupled with stringent regulations towards non-recyclable
plastic consumption at domestic level.

Figures estimate that around ten million tons of
plastic bottles need to be recycled.
Currently, less than 10% of collected plastic is
recycled.
Current recycling processes are limited to only a few
types of plastic waste which :
• means materials to be recycled must have same
components;
• makes it difficult to recycle complex plastics that
combine a mixture of different polymers
• requires chemical or thermal recycling processes
that make it impossible to retrieve same
characteristics as the original product.
Shortcomings of Current Chemical/Thermal Recycling Technologies
