This document discusses the impacts of product manufacturing beyond environmental effects, including labor conditions and impacts on surrounding communities. It provides several examples of poor labor conditions and human rights violations in factories producing well-known brands. The document advocates considering these social impacts and stresses the importance of conducting full life cycle assessments of products to understand impacts on workers, communities, indigenous peoples, and disadvantaged groups. Fair trade is mentioned as one approach but its limitations are acknowledged. Students are assigned to conduct preliminary life cycle assessments of case studies and present on impacts identified within the defined system boundaries.
