Digital transformation requires organizations to leverage new technologies like mobile, cloud, and big data analytics to develop new strategies. This transformation demands new approaches to data management and infrastructure. A robust, high-performing 1-2 socket server infrastructure is critical to support evolving applications from basic web and cloud services to advanced analytics. IBM's OpenPOWER LC servers, powered by the POWER8 processor and accelerators, provide such an infrastructure while also helping control operational expenses associated with low server utilization rates.
We produce software systems at an ever increasing rate, but our ability to get cleanup after older systems does not keep up with that pace. An IDC study showed that there are some 10k mainframe systems in use containing some 200B LOC. This shows that software is not that soft, and that once let loose systems produce long lasting consequences. Because of the impact of our industry, we need to look at software development as a problem of environmental proportions. We must build our systems with recycling in mind. As builders of the future world, we have to take this responsibility seriously.

The Business Value of VCE Vblock Systems: Leveraging Convergence to Drive Business Agility
In the past decade, information technology (IT) evolved from an enabler of back-office business processes to the very foundation of a modern business. In the increasingly digital and mobile world, the datacenter is often the first and most frequent point of contact with customers. The ability to innovate quickly lies at the heart of today’s changing business models. Businesses expect their IT investments to accelerate their pace of innovation, provide flexibility to meet new demands, and continually reduce the costs of operations.
Converged infrastructure is essential for many companies to ensure that their datacenter infrastructures can meet today’s challenges. The business rationale for deploying converged infrastructure goes far beyond traditional IT feeds and speeds. Customers using converged solutions like VCE’s Vblock Systems (Vblock) realize lower costs, greater levels of utilization, and reduced downtime. VCE customers in this study recognized business benefits such as improved organizational agility, faster application development, increased innovation, and improved employee productivity.
IDC interviewed 16 VCE Vblock Systems customers to understand and quantify the benefits delivered by their Vblock converged infrastructure deployments. Vblock Systems are built by VCE using compute, network, and storage technologies and virtualization software from Cisco, EMC, and VMware.
IDC found that by using Vblock Systems, these organizations recorded improved business outcomes and that these improvements are increasingly driving IT investment decisions.
All VCE customers interviewed for this study generated substantial business value by consolidating their IT infrastructures with Vblock. IDC calculates that these VCE customers will generate five-year discounted benefits worth an average of $384,202 per 100 users by using Vblock, which will result in an average return on investment (ROI) of 518% and a payback period of 7.5 months.

A New Breed of Servers for Digital Transformation

IDC OPINION
Digital transformation is not a buzzword. IT has moved from the back office to the front office in nearly
every aspect of business operations, driven by what IDC calls the 3rd Platform of compute with mobile,
social business, cloud, and big data analytics as the pillars. In this new environment, business leaders
are facing the challenge of lifting their organization to new levels of competitive capability, that of
digital transformation — leveraging digital technologies together with organizational, operational, and
business model innovation to develop new growth strategies. One such challenge is helping the
business efficiently reap value from big data and avoid being taken out by a competitor or disruptor
that figures out new opportunities from big data analytics before the business does.
From an IT perspective, there is a fairly straightforward sequence of applications that businesses can
adopt over time that will help put direction into this journey. IDC outlines this sequence to explain the
maturity phases of this journey. This sequence starts in familiar territory such as web and cloud; then
continues toward newer terrain, like open source and next-gen apps; and finally it enters the new world
of advanced data analytics, predictive analytics, and cognitive analytics. This, in practical terms, is
what it means from an IT perspective to digitally transform.
Digital transformation also demands a new approach to data management. Established proprietary
relational database management systems (RDBMSs) have served the enterprise well in addressing the
requirements of the first two platforms of computing, but the rapidly evolving application technologies of the
3rd Platform, with their demand for managing high volumes of changeable data and development agility,
require database technology that is also rapidly evolving and that carries a low cost barrier to adoption. It is
for this reason that open source DBMS has become a mainstay of such application development.
The DBMSs themselves vary in design to address the varied needs of 3rd Platform applications: Some
are document oriented, some are wide column stores, and some are key-value stores. High-volume
data collection and ordering environments, such as Hadoop, are important too. Relational database
systems are also part of the mix. The open source nature of these database systems ensures a low
cost of entry, and because the database systems are community managed — driven by a steady
stream of contributions to the community from application development practitioners — they can evolve
more rapidly and nimbly and with a more practical orientation than proprietary products controlled by a
vendor-employed development team.
But what is critical to keep in mind is the infrastructure needed to execute this sequence on. All these
applications benefit from a robust, high-performing one- or two-socket server infrastructure. Yet when it
comes to evaluating one- or two-socket offerings in the marketplace, most businesses only compare
