2 International Days 2016 | Program Guide
Thompson Rivers University makes intercultural understanding a strategic priority
in all that we do: in teaching, in research and throughout campus life. The most
outstanding example of this is IDays—a 23-year campus tradition of intercultural
performances, renowned keynote speakers, presentations, workshops, exhibits, films,
singing, dancing and food. Not only does IDays foster cultural understanding among our
students, it engages our external communities too.
We are proud to bring the world together at TRU. Enriched by one of the most diverse
student bodies in Canada, we host thousands of international students, Aboriginal
students and highly diverse local students. We experience and learn from the
wide-ranging cultures and perspectives of almost 80 countries and many different
First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples, here at TRU on the traditional lands of the
Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc within Secwepemculew, the traditional territory of the
Secwepemc people.
Last year an interesting fusion took place as the expressions of culture that have
long formed the bedrock of IDays catalyzed a vibrant academic and research-focused
exploration of the importance of internationalization within higher education.
This year’s second annual Learning at Intercultural Intersections Conference will
enhance the ability of educators to give students more of these exciting experiential
opportunities to develop the intercultural skills and understanding they need to become
global citizens.

Welcome to International Days 2016! We have a full schedule of activities to inspire you,
from cooking, to dancing, to films, to Aboriginal workshops. Our keynote speakers this
year include Dr. Gwynne Dyer, who will help us reflect on our feeling of safety in today’s
world, and Dr. Craig Kielburger, who will share his story of the profound difference
one person can make in the world. We are also joined by Dana Starkell, who travelled
by canoe from Winnipeg to Brazil, and by Jess Rothenburger, who spent two weeks
living and working alongside the people of El Limonal, Nicaragua, locally known as
the “Circle of Death.” We are pleased to present the documentary “Reel Injun,” which
explores how Hollywood has shaped our perceptions of indigenous cultures. Continuing
on our standing theme of international research, we are pleased to host a Learning
at Intercultural Intersections Research Symposium with participants from around
the world who will look at long-range research in the areas of internationalization
and indigenization. We will also continue our Guest Lecture series, with guests from
Belgium, Peru and USA. As always, our final event is the International Showcase: a loud
and exciting event where we come together to celebrate what makes TRU such a unique
institution. I hope to see you there!

at Intercultural Intersections
International Research Conference,

intercultrualization. The LII Research
Symposium will focus on advancing
intercultural learning research by
reuniting some 2015 participants with
additional established researchers to
foster future collaborations.

The 11th annual TRU Undergraduate
Research & Innovation Conference is
an opportunity for students from all
programs, departments, and areas of
study at TRU to share their work, either
as a poster or as a 15-minute lecture.
Posters will be displayed on the 3rd floor
of the House of Learning from 12 – 6 pm
on Friday, March 18. Concurrent lecture
sessions will run all day Saturday, March
19 in the International Building, and
a full program of all presentations is

CRAIG KIELBURGER
Keynote Speaker
Co-Founder, Me to We & Free the Children
Craig Kielburger is an internationally
acclaimed speaker, social entrepreneur,
and New York Times bestselling author.
In 1995, at age 12, Craig co-founded Free
the Children, an organization that
now has more than 2.3 million young
people annually involved in its program,
working in eight developing countries
building schools, providing clean sources
of water and assisting in food security.
Alongside his brother Marc, Craig is also
co-founder of ME to WE, an innovative
social enterprise that supports the work
of Free the Children by providing socially
conscious products and experiences, and
employs over 1,400 artisan women in
developing countries.
Craig has published 12 books, and
currently co-authors three weekly
syndicated columns on global affairs
and socially conscious living printed
in over thirty newspapers. Craig holds
a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies
from the University of Toronto and is the
youngest-ever graduate of the Kellogg-
Schulich Executive MBA program.
Voted by Canadians in a Reader’s Digest
poll to be one of Canada’s most trusted
influencers, he holds 15 honorary
doctorates and degrees, and has received
the Order of Canada, the Roosevelt
Freedom From Fear Medal, and the World
Children’s Prize for the Rights of the
Child. In 2015, he was named Canada’s
Most Admired CEO by Waterstone
Human Capital, together with his
brother Marc.
In his presentation at IDays, Craig will
draw on his extensive experience to
explain the ME to WE philosophy that

Reel Injun Movie & Discussion

“Reel Injun” explores many stereotypes
about Natives in film, from the noble
savage to the drunken Indian. It explores
how the general view of First Nations
people have been influenced and shaped
by a narrative seen within media,
especially Hollywood films. The film
will be preceded by a short discussion
about the attendees’ current knowledge
about First Nations; following the movie,
a second discussion will take place
regarding how perceptions or ideas
about First Nations have changed.

Life Experience Speaker Series –
Jess Rothenburger “Gringos in the
Garbage”
Barber Centre, HOL

In the wake of 1998 Hurricane Mitch,
thousands of people were temporarily
re-located to live on the margins of the
city of Chinandega, Nicaragua in what is
locally known as the “circle of death”: a
space between a dump, a cemetery and
a sewage plant. Just under two decades
have passed, and the community of
“El Limonal” remains at the dump and
intends to stay. Jess Rothenburger,
one of the “Gringos” who spent two
weeks living and working alongside the
people of El Limonal, will discuss his
experience and show the documentary
that was the result of his stay in the
Nicaragua community.

Intercultural competency is increasingly
being addressed in a wide variety of
contexts throughout the world. Given
the importance of this concept, what
is intercultural competence anyway?
How is intercultural competence
framed in different disciplines? How
is intercultural competence viewed
in different parts of the world? What
can be learned from these different
perspectives and what are some
implications? Join this interactive talk
as we explore these questions together,
share insights, compare perspectives
and deepen our understanding of this
often ambiguous concept.

– Dana Starkell “Paddle to
the Amazon”

Dana Starkell grew up in Winnipeg,
Canada, and from the time Dana was
a young boy, his life was filled with
adventure. Nearly every summer

Wednesday, March 16
included canoe trips, hiking around
the sand-dunes and quarries outside
their city, and rock climbing. A year
after completing high school, Dana
Starkell and his father Don Starkell
paddled 19,603 kilometers in a canoe,
from Winnipeg Canada to Belem Brazil.
Their Guinness World Record trip of 2
years took them through 13 countries,
3,000 miles of rivers, 6,000 miles of
coastline to Port of Spain, Trinidad,
and another 3,000 miles of rivers to
reach their destination at the mouth
of the Amazon River. “Paddle to the
Amazon” is a stunning book, written
by Don Starkell, recounting from his
journals the most important parts
of their trip. Dana, Don’s son and co-
captain in this adventure, will share his
favourite stories from the trip, discuss
the impacts the trip has had on his life,
the relationship between him and his
father, and share with us the drive that
kept them going through every major
obstacle. Join us to hear this stunning
experience and have a chance to ask
Dana your questions.

Bacteria: Partners in Remediation of
Contaminated Soils and Groundwater?
Join Jaco Vangronsveld, a full-
professor Environmental Sciences at
Hasselt University, for a discussion on
bioremediation and soil formation, and
the effects of global climate change
on plant and microbial communities.
Jaco is director of the Centre for
Environmental Sciences, and head of
the research group Environmental
Biology, which belongs to the Centre
for Environmental Sciences. This
research group has a longstanding
experience in the field of heavy metal
uptake by plants and the effects of
toxic metal concentrations on plants
and mycorrhiza, and is involved in
several projects concerning the metal
contamination in the surroundings
of the zinc smelters in the north-
east of Belgium.

and taught the dance moves from that
particular culture. To finish it off in
style, we will have a competition to see

Aboriginal Drum Making Workshop

Get hands-on experience in the process
of assembling a basic hand drum with
instructor Matty Chillihitzia. Learn the
history behind drum making, including
the traditional Aboriginal techniques
involved in gathering the materials, and
the various types of drums that can be
made. Please visit the ISAP desk in the
International Building to register. A small
registration fee of $10 will cover the cost
of the drum materials, and the finished
product will be yours to keep! Space is
limited, so don’t delay. Priority will be
given to those who have not attended
this event in past years.

hosting a cultural fundraising dinner
at Flavours of India Restaurant. The
night will include an all-you-can-eat
buffet dinner consisting of a wide
variety of delicious Indian food, a warm
atmosphere, and entertainment while
you eat! Tickets will be sold by individual
Study Abroad Ambassadors at a price
of $20, and there are two dinner seating
options of 5:30 pm - 7:20 pm and 7:30
pm - 9:30 pm available. Please see our

Keynote Speaker – Dr. Gwynne Dyer

The New World Disorder
There is a sense that the world is drifting
out of control, and the level of fear of the
future is definitely rising. This lecture is
an attempt to assess the real level of risk,
for it’s not nearly as high as it seems.
Gwynne Dyer has worked as a freelance
journalist, columnist, broadcaster
and lecturer on international affairs
for more than 20 years, although he
was originally trained as a historian.
Born in Newfoundland, he received
degrees from Canadian, American and
British universities, finishing with a
Ph.D. in Military and Middle Eastern
History from the University of London.
He served in three navies and held
academic appointments at the Royal
Military Academy Sandhurst and Oxford
University before launching his twice-
weekly column on international affairs,
which is published by over 175 papers in
some 45 countries. His most recent book
“Don’t Panic: Islamic State, Terrorism
and the Middle East” was published by
Random House in October, 2015 and is
the basis for this IDays lecture.

A Macroeconomic Tour Around
the World

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of
Economic Fluctuations and Growth
Research conducted by a group
of undergraduate students will be
presented in a poster session. Whether
nations are developed, developing or
underdeveloped, they all face “good,
bad, and ugly” economic times, and
this symposium is meant to explore
these periods. Topics include: Greece’s
recent economic crises; the US 2008
“great recession” and its impact around
the world; the Asian Financial Crises;
oil shocks and Nigeria’s economy; the
Great Depression; the impact of wars
on economies; the breakdown of the
Soviet Union; and many other major
events across the world. Visit the online

This free event has become a favourite
for many in the TRU and Kamloops
community. The cultural performances
at the International Showcase are
always an inspiring and exciting display
of global artistry and the gifts hidden
amongst us. Students, staff and faculty
members will amaze you with over 20
cultural performances demonstrating
their talents in music, dancing and more,
while the International Fashion Show
features various types of traditional
and modern ethnic clothing from
around the world. In our International
Exhibits, students will host table exhibits
displaying flags, photographs, art,
souvenirs and more from their home
countries. Guests are invited to visit, ask
questions, and gain an understanding of
each unique country and culture.
Back by popular demand, we are pleased
to provide an opportunity for you to
experience culinary delights in our
International Food Fair from some of
Kamloops’ favourite ethnic restaurants.

at the entrance to the Gymnasium as
vendors will not be accepting payment

The TRU Traditional Powwow is a free
event for students, staff and community
members filled with Aboriginal music
and dancing; additionally, various
Aboriginal vendors will be displaying
and selling their arts and crafts. A
light lunch will be provided both days,
and a dinner on Saturday, March 19th,
and there will be an opportunity for
attendees to join in on dancing and
winning prizes for open dance specials.
