Civil Engineering
Whilst getting my Civil Engineering degree I’ve struggled to find, within a
mostly environmentally damaging field, a path where I can work towards
making a positive social and environmental impact. Impact design is a
way for me to achieve this, since I can use the engineering knowledge I’ve
attained to make a real difference. I wish to apply impact design in my career
by working on projects that help communities to live in a more sustainable
and environmentally conscious way.
Georgia Institute of Technology
Masters of Science in Human Computer Interaction
Hello, I’m an aspiring UX Designer currently studying HCI/UX at Georgia
Tech. Before that, I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from
University of Michigan. I come from a very diverse background into the
UX field with my long range of skill sets from doing UX research, creating
attractive designs, making prototypes and coding for web. From my
experience of learning and working, I learned that design matters a lot,
everywhere. I believe this opportunity of being an Impact Design Fellow for
Net Impact will help me to become a more prepared UXer in the near future!
Georgetown University
Biology, minor in business administration
I'm most excited to create real impact using design. In my career I want to
show people that everyone is a designer and can create impact. I dressed up
as Photoshop for Halloween once but my heart really belongs to Illustrator.
In my free time I like to fry eggs. By the end of 2016 I will have been both
above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle. Show me a typeface
and I can tell you what it is.

Design for Social Innovation
I am a product designer from India with a specialization in sustainable materials from
the National Institute of Design in India. Tired of mindlessly creating more and more
products, I came to Design for Social Innovation to understand the relationships
between products and their environment. I am excited to apply systemic thinking,
human-centered design, rapid prototyping and community engagement to foster
impact design. I would like to explore creative solutions that address the complex
social and environmental challenges our society faces today. In the past I have
worked with a number of local communities focussing on design as a tool for
community empowerment.
Philadelphia University
Sustainable Design
The fact that the Fellowship gives me the opportunity to design for a real-
life scenario is what is exciting for me. I consider myself lucky to be guided
by some of the finest people while putting everything I’ve learned at the
conference to practice. I chose to come into the profession of design
because I’ve always believed that a product of design can make a world of
difference. I believe that this fellowship will give me that opportunity while
also opening up possibilities leading to my master’s dissertation project.

Impact design is the creation of human focused projects which have as
an output positive social change. This types of initiatives aim to improve
people's life by spotting specific pain points, creating insights, co-creating,
prototyping and iterating continuously in order to find the right solution. I
see myself as a change agent, so impact design can be found in most of the
projects I get involved in. I have been part of hackathons and design jams for
companies like Toyota, IDEO and CSI.
L O U R D E S M A R T I N E Z
School of Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)
Master of Fine Art, Design for Emerging Technologies
My blood type changed from B positive to B negative. I received my BFA at
SAIC in Fiber and Material Studies and somehow it led me towards design.
I am currently in two departments, Architecture and Art and Technological
studies that branched the name “Design for Emerging Tech”. This year I
focused a lot on Chicago’s source of drinking water. It seems pretty clear to
me that we (as a western society) think that the social change should impact
third world countries, but we often forget to reflect on the resources around
us.
Virginia Tech
Industrial Design
I am most excited about making a difference in user experience in the
world through impact design. I want to make the world a place that is not
just simpler and easier, but fun and engaging. I want to be able to improve
people’s life narratives and experience through my design.
University of Wisconsin-Madison & Arizona State University
MBA (Conc. in Operations and Technology Management & Biomimicry
To me, Impact Design represents a life devoid of cynicism, where functional
and practical can be synonymous with sustainable and responsible. I am a
biomimic, which means taking design inspiration from the wisdom of nature
and applying it to human design challenges. My most recent pursuit is to
find a better way to deliver life giving materials to those who have been
displaced by catastrophic events by way of emulating the honey bee and its
hexagonal cell array. In the future I hope to be a voice in design for all those
stakeholders who have traditionally been left out of the conversation.
S A R A H T A N G
University of Pennsylvania
Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, and Computer Science
I’m excited by how impact design gives you the opportunity to create,
innovate, prototype until you reach a product that is artistic and practical.
With a strong interest in international development, I hope to apply impact
design to developing products and innovations to support developing
countries.
