4. CHOOSING A PROBLEM, DEMOCRATIC WAY!
We brainstormed to see what project we could take up. Everyone
came up with some suggestions, we consolidated the list as follows:
1. Service project at local orphanage to improve their living condition.
2. Creating awareness about Child labor.
3. Creating awareness about female feticide and infanticide.
4. Service Project with Atma-Jyoti – Home for Blind Girls.
5. Donate cloths and books to Amar Jyoti - school for differently gifted students.
6. Creating awareness about Global warming.
7. Campaign to save water.
8. Adapting a school in poor neighborhood to improve their classrooms.
9. Service project with “Project Roshni – for people with cerebral palsy”
10. Campaign for safe roads.
We wanted to involve differently gifted students of our own age in this project,
so we shortlisted:
1. Atma Jyoti – Home for Blind Girls
2. Amar Jyoti – School & Rehabilitation Center
3. Project Roshni – Center for People with Cerebral Palsy.
5. CHOOSING A PROBLEM CONTINUED…
We then visited all these three places to find out which place will be our final choice.
This is when we experienced that each individual has special gifts, we need to find
that something special in every one.
We attended the Annual function of
Amar Jyoti – School for differently
gifted, there we saw polio struck
children dancing with
crutches, children in wheel chair
performing dare devil stunts, children
with hearing impediment performing
mime acts, etc. In all their
performances we saw the
indomitable human spirit, to
overcome all limits and zeal to be
recognized in the mainstream life for
their talents.
6. CHOOSING A PROBLEM CONTINUED…
We visited “Project Roshni –
center for people with
cerebral palsy”, where people
with cerebral palsy learn to
lead independent life through
pre-vocational training. We
then invited them to arrange
an exhibition & sale of the
items they make as part of
pre-vocational training. We
saw the beauty and creativity
in the items they make and
they even taught us how to
make few of those items.
7. CHOOSING A PROBLEM CONTINUED…
We visited “Atma Jyoti –
Home for Blind Girls” and
made friendship with
them. The visually
challenged girls sang
songs, played piano and
danced for us. They even
played chess with us and
defeated us. We saw the
talents and zeal to develop
those talents in them, we
became good friends and
great fans of these girls.
8. FINALIZING THE PROBLEM
After visiting all three places, it was difficult to choose one, but the girls at
Atma Jyoti made very good impression on us with their zeal to learn new
things and eagerness to improve their skills, so we chose Atma Jyoti
unanimously.
We involved our new friends at Atma Jyoti in consultation to see what is the
best thing we can do together to help them realize their own potential.
Most of them think that studying is very important to realize their own
talent and live a respectful life. Through education we can sharpen our
inherent capacities and realize our true potential.
We also realized that they face few problems in studies, which we don’t face
because we can see. We want our improve the quality of their studies, so
we took up that as our main problem in the project.

11. BRAINSTORMING
We conducted brainstorming session to find ideas on what can we do help our
visually challenged friends, following is partial list of our ideas:
1. Read lessons for them.
2. Make audio lessons on cassettes for them.
3. Celebrate their birthdays.
4. Celebrate our own birthdays with them.
5. Study with them.
6. Write exams for them.
7. Learn Braille and write notes for them.
8. Donate a Braille embosser to their school.
9. Donate Braille books to their school.
10. Start a choir group with them.
11. Teach them songs.
12. Teach them dances.
13. Prepare a skit with them.
14. Go for picnic with them.
15. Visit them and find out what they need.
16. Organize exhibition and sale of handicraft items they make.
12. DATA COLLECTION
We visited our visually
challenged friends again
to conduct a survey about
challenges they face. We
asked them few questions
orally and recorded their
replies. We then
consolidated all their
replies in a matrix, so that
we could analyze the data
using Pareto Analysis.

16. • Pareto Analysis showed us that if we
work on there 2 vital issues of ‘limited
study materials’ and ‘giving exams’, we
could solve most of their troubles in
studies.
• We then used Dr. Ishikawa’s Why-Why
technique to go to the root causes.

1. Unavailability of Braille printer/embosser
2. Social non-acceptance due to stigma that
visually challenged are dis-abled.
3. Only method of instruction at present is oral
instruction.
4. Unavailability of Braille books/study material
5. No special schools for visually challenged
19. STRATEGIES PROPOSED
A:
Problem: Unavailability of
Braille printer.
Strategy: To collect funds to
donate a Braille Printer.
A good quality Braille Printer, with computer
interface costs approximately Rs. 200,000.00
(Two lakh Rupees), that is a huge
cost, especially for a group of high school
All the donations towards purchase of students. So we discussed the idea of

Mr. Yogesh at Little Angels High School: and appeal everyone to donate, we need to

20. STRATEGIES PROPOSED
B:
Problem: Social non-acceptance
due to stigma that visually
challenged are dis-abled.
Strategy 1: Organize exhibitions of the
handicraft things these girls have made.
We spoke to our school Principal Dr. Mrs. Alka Sharma
about this idea and she suggested to organize the
exhibition & sale of these handicraft items on a Parent-
Teacher Meeting day, when lot of parents come to the
school, this way many people can visit the exhibition and
buy few things from there.
Strategy 2: All girls mixed choir group from
both schools.
We spoke to our visually challenged friends about this
idea and they are very excited about this idea. They sing
very well. We will invite to sing with us once in our
school Assembly and then start the choir group.
21. STRATEGIES PROPOSED
C:
Problem: Only method
of learning is oral
instruction
Strategy 1: To prepare audio
lessons for them.
We spoke to their warden Ms Priti Yadav
about this idea, she was very happy with
the idea. She said that the girls have some
cassette players and they use it regularly, if
we make audio lessons on cassettes it will
be beneficial for them.
Strategy 2: To prepare Braille
study notes for them.
When we donate the Braille printer, this
will happen automatically.
22. STRATEGIES PROPOSED
D:
Problem: No special
schools for visually
challenged.
Strategy: Write to Government
authorities to start a special
school for visually challenged
students.
Do you want to see this beautiful world
even after death?
We discussed this with our parents and
teachers and most of them told us that
there are such schools in big cities and
setting up one takes lots of resources.
Some parents suggested that we create
awareness about EYE Donation, which will
Donate eyes! benefit the visually challenged people in
general.
23. ANALYZING OUTCOME - 1
Though we plan using the QC
tools, sometimes we need to change
plans for good reasons, like writing
exams for these visually challenged
girls came up suddenly and we had
put everything aside to do that first.
This came up suddenly, because the
Exam dates for them were changed
to start and finish earlier and thus
their regular exam writers could not
help them, so we organized the
writers for them.
All our visually challenged friends
got very good grades and we
celebrated their success together.
24. ANALYZING OUTCOME - 2
The Exhibition and Sale
of handicraft items
made by the visually
challenged girls created
lot of awareness among
parents about talents of
these girls. Now many
people go to Atma Jyoti
to visit and sometimes
buy few things made by
them.
25. ANALYZING OUTCOME - 3
• We could not prepare
audio lessons for them
before exam, due to lack
of time and now that they
are next class, their school
is changing their syllabi
and we can get the books
only in August 2009. We’ll
prepare the audio lessons
then.
• We’ve started collecting
funds for Braille
Printer, we hope to buy
and donate the printer by
mid-July.
26. ANALYZING OUTCOME - 4
• We have good feeling
about the choir
group, we have
already started singing
together, soon we’ll
be performing on big
stage together.
• Our awareness
campaign for eye
donation is
appreciated by our
teachers and parents.
27. DOING MORE – FOLLOW UP
• Even after we finish this
project, we will still keep visiting
out new friends and make sure
they have no troubles in studies.
• We hope by next year they’ll be
able to learn typing and give their
examinations using type-
writers, we’ll work on that.
• We’ll create more awareness about
donating eyes.
• In past our teachers and students
have helped the girls from Atma
Jyoti to start a Quality Circle. We
will also help our friends start their
own Quality Circles to solve their
problems on their own.
