The chapter consists of several aspects of behavioural finance and its foundations such as;
Overconfidence is the tendency for people to overestimate their knowledge, abilities, and the precision of their information, or to be overly sanguine (optimistic) of the future and their ability to control it. It is found that most people most of the time are overconfident is well documented by researchers in the psychology literature.
Overconfidence comes in different forms one of them is miscalibration, the tendency to believe that your knowledge is more precise (accuracy) than it really is.
Prospect theory assumes that losses and gains are valued differently, and thus individuals make decisions based on perceived gains instead of perceived losses. Also known as the "loss-aversion" theory, the general concept is that if two choices are put before an individual, both equal, with one presented in terms of potential gains and the other in terms of possible losses, the former option will be chosen.
Emotion is a complex, subjective experience accompanied by biological and behavioral changes. Emotion involves feeling, thinking, activation of the nervous system, physiological changes, and behavioral changes such as facial expressions.
There are many different types of emotions that have an influence on how we live and interact with others. At times, it may seem like we are ruled by these emotions. The choices we make, the actions we take, and the perceptions we have are all influenced by the emotions we are experiencing at any given moment.
The adaptive market hypothesis (AMH) is an alternative economic theory that combines principles of the well-known and often controversial efficient market hypothesis (EMH) with behavioral finance. It was introduced to the world in 2004 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Andrew Lo.

It discusses choosing the right mutual funds by properly diversifying across market caps, fund houses, and types of funds. Past performance is not indicative of future returns, and funds should be evaluated based on long-term performance across market cycles.
The document shows the sum assured and annualized yield over 10 years of the LIC Jeevan Vriddhi guaranteed maturity premium plan for various entry ages from 8 to 50. The sum assured ranges from Rs. 1984.6 for an entry age of 8 to Rs. 1582.25 for an entry age of 50. The annualized yield ranges from 6.93% for an entry age of 8 to 4.53% for an entry age of 50.
LIC's Jeevan Ankur plan provides life insurance coverage for parents with the child as the beneficiary. It pays out the sum assured, income benefit, and maturity benefit on the parent's death. The plan offers customization through riders and guarantees maturity payouts for the child's future. It is a suitable option for parents to financially secure their child's future.
The document compares retirement in the 1980s versus retirement in the 2010s. It notes that in the 1980s, retirees experienced higher interest rates on bank deposits, more joint families for support, and lower aspirations post-retirement. However, by the 2010s, interest rates are market-linked and volatile, nuclear families are more common, and retirees want to maintain their pre-retirement standard of living. The document emphasizes that retirement planning is now a necessity due to factors like inflation, increased healthcare costs, and rising life expectancies. It provides statistics showing increasing healthcare and living costs over time if no retirement planning is done.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.

This document discusses how investing can help achieve life goals like buying a house, saving for children's education, and a comfortable retirement. It notes that inflation reduces purchasing power over time, so investing wisely can help overcome inflation. It then introduces Family Solutions as a unique investment solution from Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund that can help plan for different life goals through a single investment plan.
The key features of the Indian budget for 2011-2012 focused on opportunities for growth from economic reforms and rural development, challenges around inflation and implementation gaps, and an overview of the economy expected to grow at 9%. The budget aimed to sustain growth through fiscal consolidation, tax and expenditure reforms, subsidies, infrastructure development, and strengthening inclusion through social spending on education, health, and rural programs.
1) SIP provides benefits like rupee cost averaging, power of compounding, and avoiding attempts to time the market. Stories are used to illustrate these concepts in simple terms.
2) One story shows how disciplined, regular investing like SIP is better than sporadic efforts to get fit like the character who injured himself.
3) Another story demonstrates how averaging purchase costs over time through SIP can reduce losses from unexpectedly poor performance on one investment.
This document discusses the benefits of systematic investment plans (SIPs) for achieving financial goals like retirement, children's education, and family commitments. SIPs allow investors to invest small monthly amounts that benefit from the power of compounding over the long term. Equity investments through SIPs are ideal for meeting long-term goals since equities have historically offered higher returns than other asset classes. Regular investing through SIPs also reduces market timing risk. The document provides examples of the monthly investments needed through SIPs to achieve common financial goals like retirement and children's education to demonstrate how SIPs can help investors achieve their goals.

After this second you should be able to: Explain the main determinants of demand for any mineral product, and their relative importance; recognise and explain how demand for any product is likely to change with economic activity; recognise and explain the roles of technology and relative prices in influencing demand; be able to explain the differences between the rates of growth of demand for different products.
In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
