This document provides information about a GCSE geography field trip to Iceland organized by St Ivo School Geography Department. The 5-day trip will take place in 2017 and will allow students to experience first-hand many of the topics covered in class, particularly related to tectonic environments. Students will stay at the Husid guesthouse near Hvollsvöllur and participate in activities like visiting geothermal areas, waterfalls, glaciers, and volcanic sites. They will learn about Iceland's tectonic history and geology. The deadline to apply with a £100 deposit is October 3, 2016 and there are 30 available spaces.

So what will out itinerary be? ...
This fieldtrip will provide you with first hand
experience of many of the ideas and topics
that we cover during the GCSE course –
particularly for Unit 3 – Natural Environments
in which we study tectonic environments!
Where will we stay?
The Skallin Centre
Our accommodation will be the Husid guesthouse, part of the Skallin Centre
Hvollsvöllur in southern Iceland in a tranquil location with stunning views of the
surrounding landscape!

3. …We arrive in Iceland early afternoon and
have the chance to experience bathing in the
amazing thermally heated waters of the
famous Blue lagoon!
Day 1 “The Blue Lagoon”

4. Day 2. “Gluggers and Gushers”
Cinder Cone volcanic crater
Spectacular waterfalls including Gulfoss!Shooting geysers and Bubbling pools!

5. Followed by an evening
swim and a relax in the
pools geothermally heated
hotpots
In the afternoon we visit Þingvellir
National Park – site of a rift valley
marking the crest of the Mid-Atlantic
Ridge with its spectacular scenery
and a chance to get to grips with
Iceland’s tectonic history.

6. Day 3. “A Day on Heimaey”
Sail out to the island of Heimaey on the Westmann islands and climb the volcano Eldfell
which erupted in 1973. Walk over the lava flows and see the houses being dug out of
the ash. At the top the rock is still warm!

7. After a late afternoon swim, dinner is back at the Husid Guesthouse. During
this day we also hope to get a unique close up view of the site of the
Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption of 2010

8. Day 4. “Wet, Wetter, Wettest – There’s
snout like it!”

Have you ever walked behind a
waterfall? Now’s your chance!
Rugged Coastline….
We will see classic coastal
landforms as we visit the
rugged Icelandic coastline
Glistening Glaciers…
We will visit the glacier snout of
Solheimajökull – just one of
Iceland’s many spectacular
glaciers.

9. Day 5 – “Cracking up & Drifting apart”
… finally back to Keflavik for our
return flight to Heathrow – full of
happy memories of the stunning land
of fire and ice!
A final chance to experience the volcanic origin
of Iceland – from the strange lunar type landscape
of the lava fields to the amazing geothermal area
at Krysuvik with boiling mud puddles!
You will also visit the Bridge over two continents –
a unique opportunity to cross over the meeting point
between the North American and the Eurasian
crustal plates!
