Ingress Protection (IP) Codes are marked on products to inform the consumer and the inspection authority to what level of “ingress” the product is rated = what level of protection from foreign objects and moisture the product enclosure provides. Many International Product Safety Standards require a specific minimum IP rating to insure that the product enclosure provides sufficient protection according to the intended environment in which the product will be used. For example: indoor use only, protected outdoor use, exposed outdoor use, submersion, etc.
Each “IP Code” correlates to a specific test program. By understanding the IP Codes and which IP Code is required for your product, you may then determine the specific environmental tests specified for compliance. This information is critical to know PRIOR to the product design to insure a 1st time compliant product.
IEEE-PSES Presentation: Don't Get Burned By Plasticsbbisenius
The use of Plastics in electrical products continues to grow. What started with circuit boards and transformer bobbins, now includes most enclosures and component bodies. New applications for plastics appear every day. Yet most engineers know little more than to ask for the UL flame rating.
To prevent getting “burned” during your compliance evaluations due to improperly specified plastics, it is important to know how to incorporate plastics into electrical products. We will discuss the core plastics requirements, material verification, differences between North American & International plastics standards, and the plastics tests. Perhaps even more importantly, we will discuss application specific plastics tests, how to avoid them, and how to prepare for them when they cannot be avoided.
This is a presentation intended for engineers and technicians who are involved with the design and/or compliance verification of products that incorporate plastics.
For most of the hi-tech/harmonized standards such as IEC60950, IEC61010, and IEC60601, the requirements surrounding Risk of Shock hazard protection encompass more than half the requirements in the standard = both construction and testing requirements. In fact, all mains voltage powered products enclose a Risk of Shock. It is therefore crucial that the design & compliance teams have a high level understanding of what defines a Risk of Shock and Accessibility, and how to design for compliance. This workshop will incorporate both seminar instruction and hands-on demonstration.

"Innovation" and "Rural" are not perceived as compatible terms. Why is this, and how can we change it? How can we build creative rural communities that produce more creative people and more innovations that drive opportunities in rural places?

Cold 'cure' wins Edison
Award
Two home-schooled students from
Westerville claimed the top prize at the 2008
Invention Convention by proposing a cure
for the common cold. Mark David Wright, a
seventh-grader, and Michelle Vawter, an
eighth-grader, claimed the Edison Award,
which includes a $2,500 college scholarship
from CollegeAdvantage.
"We spent a lot of work and time on this to
try to live up to their standards," Mark David
Wright said. Their invention, Immunity
Insurance, "releases proven cold-fighting
compounds into the body immediately after
the cold virus enters your body and well
before you feel the symptoms of a cold,"
Wright said. He and Vawter first came up
with the idea in October and then spent six
to seven months perfecting their cold-
fighting compound.

Student lands first-place
prize for ‘Katabelt
Westgate Alternative School first-grader
Tyler Grayson Morefield received a first-
place prize in the kindergarten through
second-grade portion of the event for his
invention, the "Katabelt."
A first-grader at Westgate Alternative School
was among the winners of Columbus'
regional Invention Convention last month.
Morefield, who practices karate, said he
created the belt to help fellow students
remember their kata, a set of choreographed
movements. "The 'Katabelt' helps me
remember what moves come next in the
kata so people won't have to think what's
going," Morefield said.
Lisa Morefield, Tyler's mother, said the
Invention Convention acts as a good
learning tool. "At this age I think they start to
recognize that things are going on in the
world that are a little scary,"

Cold Conqueror team
headed to national
science competition
State Rep. Marian Harris (D-Columbus)
meets with home-schooled students (from
left) Michelle Vawter, 15, of Westerville, Allie
Frazier, 15, of Sunbury, and Mark David
Wright, 14, of Westerville, at the Vern Riffe
Center Monday, June 1. The students, who
won the regional competition for
eCYBERMISSION, have been investigating
a cure for the common cold. Three local
teens will travel to the nation's capital next
month to show off their latest invention -- a
possible cure for the common cold.
Their product, Cold Conqueror, takes a
proactive approach to the problem, Vawter
said. "Our invention is a once-a-month nasal
inhalant that eliminates the common cold,"
she said. "It does this by releasing our
compound before someone starts feeling the
symptoms. They take it once a month, and it
helps their bodies to fight off the cold 24-7,
releasing when the germs enter the body,
not just when the patient takes the inhalant."
