4. Introduction
Each Muslim has 3 types of duties:
the first called huqooq allah
the duties to God
the second called huqooq un Nafs
the duties to our own selves
the third, huqooq ul ibad
the duty towards family, friends, and people at large
5. Introduction
Allah will forgive us certain transgressions
example: lapses in routine obligations of prayer, fasting,
charity, etc
Problems will arise from lapses in huqooq ul ibad
It is our belief that :
the individual you have wronged
must forgive you before Allah
forgives that particular transgression !
6. Quran
surah an Nisa :36
And worship Allah [alone], and do not ascribe partners to Him. And do good
unto your parents and near of kin and unto orphans, and the needy, and the
neighbor from among your own people, and the neighbor who is a stranger,
and the friend by your side, and the wayfarer, and those whom your right
hand possess. Verily, Allah does not love those who are full of self-conceit
and boastful.
7. Bukhari
Book No.46, Hadith 730
The Holy Prophet, pbuh, said:
“everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for
his charges. The ruler who has authority over people,
is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a
guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a
woman is a guardian of her husband's house and
children and is responsible for them; a slave ('abu) is a
guardian of his master's property and is responsible
for it; so all of you are guardians and are responsible
for your charges."

18. Huqooq ul Ibad
Deeni
Rights of Ambiyaa and Malaaikah
We are informed about Allah, His pleasures and displeasures
through the Ambiyaa , and they through wahi conveyed by the
Angels
Their teaching is, for our Deeni and worldly benefit and to
safeguard us from sin
On Allah’s command Angels perform beneficial tasks (eg rain)
Thus, rights due to Ambiyaa and Malaaikah are in part, of the
rights of Allah
Favours of RasulullahSaw

thus the rights due to him are also the most.

minor things
The Shariat has granted - right of neighbourship
- means that according to Shariat if you want to sell your home,
then the neighbour has the first option and right to buy it
The Ulema have said that ‘just as you have colleagues and
neighbours when at home, so too while travelling you have travel

They are like your neighbours, companions

Sahih Muslim
79. Hadith

while in anger”

81. Huqooq ul Ibad
Dunyavi
Rights of guests
To welcome them when they arrive
and to at least accompany them till the door when they depart
To organise and prepare their necessities
To treat them with honour and respect (serve them with your own
hands)
At least on one day prepare a special meal, but only to that extent
where you do not feel burdened, nor the guest embarrassed
At the most one should play host for 3 days
So much is their necessary right and your duty thereafter for as
long as they stay it is a favour of their host upon them.
82. Huqooq ul Ibad

generously for a day and a night with high quality food and
entertained for three days with ordinary food and if he stays
longer, what he will be provided with will be regarded as
Sadaqa”
Bukhari
Volume 8 Book 73: 48
85. Huqooq ul Ibad
Dunyavi
Rights of friends:
The Quran mentions the 'specialties', which exist in, close family
ties, as being the same found in friendship
These are the etiquettes and rights of friends:
Friends, should be observed carefully regarding beliefs, actions,
dealings and character
If of a sound and pious nature then forge friendship, otherwise
stay away

Merciful”

(good deed or charity)”
Tirmizi
An ideal quality
“Each of you is like a mirror for his brother. If he sees
something ill in his brother , he should try to dispel it”
Tirmizi
90. Islamic view on adoption
The custom of 'adopting' children has no basis in
Shariat
The Islamic legal status of adopted children is no more
than that of 'sincere friendship'
Legally speaking, like in inheritance, etc., they do not
receive any share
91. Law pertaining to disinheritance :
The custom of disinheriting is totally unlawful and null
and void
eg: saying that so and so (of his children or Islamically legal heir)
should not receive inheritance
Inheritance is a command of Shariat and thus
obligatory, and not voluntary
93. Animals have rights too !
Islam has made ill-treatment of animal
reason for entering Hellfire
Showing them compassion and treating them well
is a means to attain forgiveness of one's sins
94. Hadith
Sahih al Bukhari
Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, said :
"Once a man was tending to some business, and
became very thirsty. He came across a well, so he
descended into it and drank from it. [When he came
out], he saw a dog panting and rolling his mouth in dirt
(in search of water) due to thirst. The man said, 'This
dog is as thirsty as I was.' So he descended [once
again] filled his boot with water and gave drink to the
dog. [Due to that] Allah rewarded him by forgiving his
sins." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we be
rewarded even due to our well treatment of animals?"
He replied, "Yes indeed. For [the well treatment of]
every fresh liver (living thing) you will receive reward."
95. Hadith
Sahih al Bukhari
Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, said :
"A woman was punished due to a cat. She imprisoned
it until it died, so she entered the Hellfire due to it. She
did not feed it nor give it drink when she kept it, nor did
she let it free to eat the insects (and other things) of
the earth."
96. Rights of Animals
Animals not of direct benefit :
- do not cage them for no reason
- do not take the young away from parents
- do not merely kill them for sport
97. Rights of Animals
Animals we use for our benefit :
- provide for their food and care
- do not task them beyond their capabilities
- do not beat them over the limit
Animals for slaughter/ harmful one which is to be
killed :
- kill with a sharp instrument, knife, etc.
- do not make it suffer unnecessarily
- do not starve an animal or cause it to die
99. Huqooq ul Ibad
It’s Significance
Islam is undoubtedly a religion of action
Service of man and the good of humanity
constitute pre-eminently the service and worship of Allah
All creation is the family of God
Of all creation the most beloved of God
is one who does most good to his family
100. Huqooq ul Ibad
It’s Significance
Allah will not be merciful to him who is not merciful to men
Allah is always ready to help His worshipper
so long as the worshipper is ready to help his brother
Allah is merciful to those who are merciful.
“Be ye then merciful to those who are in the earth,
so that He who is in the heaven may be merciful to you.”
101. Huqooq ul Ibad
Ideal life
A selfless life is the ideal life of a Muslim
Asked as to the best part of faith, Prophet Muhammad,
pbuh, said:
“That thou love for the sake of God, and hate for the
sake of God, and that thou love for men what thou
lovest for thyself, and hate for them what thou hates
for thyself.”
“Ye shall not believe unless ye love one another.”
102. Conclusion
The importance of Huqooq ul Ibad
cannot be over emphasised as this
is among the pre-requisites
for proper Ibaadat
