God's Amazing Work in Lives
1. I have heard some great testimonies lately from people. It is amazing what God is
doing through His Spirit and His people. I am seeing some good fruit. Today I am
going to give you some new stories, a couple updates, and a few things God is
teaching me.
Last Sunday I was sitting in church and there was a young man in the front row
that caught my attention. I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to go and talk to him
during the service. I certainly didn’t want to interrupt the service. He got up and
walked out. I felt like the Holy Spirit wanted me to go after him. I didn’t though.
If you have read my blog enough you know that sometimes I don’t jump right
away. It takes me too long in my eyes to move. He came back in. I felt the Holy
Spirit say, “Take him out of the service and talk to him”. Now a red flag was
raised in my mind. In my mind I said, “HA! I know the Holy Spirit wouldn’t want
me to disrupt a church service to take a young man and talk to him”. I think I was
for a moment glad that I wouldn’t need to face my embarrassment of beginning
this conversation. “Excuse me young man, Will you go outside during the service
with me”? Seriously!?. It didn’t stop though. Even though I am slow to obey the
Holy Spirit promptings I really hate it when I don’t do it at all. Who wants to
spend your whole Sunday sitting around knowing that you blew it? I didn’t. I told
my wife what I thought I was being lead to do. She said, “Go do it”. I am so
thankful for all her support. I really am! She has always encouraged me.
Sometimes she brings some much needed humor into the situation too by saying,
“Glad He’s asking you instead of me”. I laugh and say, “Thanks”. I went up to the
front row and I said to the person he was with, “Excuse me. Would you care if I
took this young man for a moment and talk to him”? She shrugged and said,
“Sure”. I looked at him and said, “Follow me”. I had very little in mind to talk
about instead of my testimony but I knew it was the Lord. I have not seen this
young man before. When we came closer to the door I heard him say, “What did
I do this time”? Then I knew I had the right guy. I smiled and kept walking.
I was praying not too long ago and asking God questions. I do that a lot. Try it
sometimes. He will answer. Sometimes not right away but it will come. I have
been working backwards lately. I will get taught something by the Holy Spirit and
I will not have the Bible verse to back it up. I will ask God where it is and sooner
2. or later it will come. I was asking Him why He asks us to do odd/uncomfortable
things so often. Many people will refer doing what you feel God is leading you to
do as a prophetic act. The Bible is full of prophetic acts by humans (Leading
Moses to strike the Red Sea with his staff) followed by Heavenly power. Buy why
embarrassment? I don’t know and I probably will never know the whole truth but
I received a wave of an answer. It usually doesn’t come like that to me but this
time it did. It wasn’t just an answer it was a very complete and instant
understanding of this particular point. I was listening to the radio when I heard
the verse (that I have heard many times)
Luke 9:23
New International Version (NIV)
23
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple
must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow
me.
All of my real understanding on this verse is small but I think I have the concept of
suffering that was included in that statement. When I heard that verse I felt the
word humiliated wash over me in reference to that verse. In an instant I had a
much greater understanding of the answer of my prayer. Jesus was absolutely
publicly humiliated when he carried the cross. He was stripped, beaten, whipped,
struck, spit on, crowned with thorns, and paraded in front of his family, disciples,
Mother, and community. The very people He was there to save were humiliating
Him. He was being treated as the worst criminal and was without sin. Just a
week earlier He was being praised by many of the people who were now yelling
crucify Him. Yet He kept going. He didn’t stop the process even though He could
have. He remained through it all focused intently on the goal. Not only that but
He was asking God to forgive us. It is a stark contrast to the world we live in. You
might see someone overreact more from a parking ticket then Jesus did to his
public crucifixion.
It is another piece to that verse about picking up our cross. I believe the
uncomfortable situations we are placed in areHim refining us. I could see Him
saying something like this. “Do you care more about your comfort or saving a life
3. from an eternity in Hell”. If He had to be humiliated and He asks us to pick up our
cross daily shouldn’t we participate in some small measure of humiliation or
comfortableness?
I will call this young man Will. Will and I went upstairs in a room to sit down and
talk. I told him that I felt like the Holy Spirit wanted me to speak some truth to
him. Some people have cautioned me against saying the Holy Spirit told me or
talking about the Holy Spirit. I DON’T BUY THAT AT ALL! He is the reason for
anyone accepting Christ. He is the reason I walk up to a stranger. He gives me
the words to say at the right time. He tells us what streets to go to, and what
houses to stay away from. Jesus said we would be better because He left we will
receive the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that whoever curses God or Jesus will be
forgiven, but whoever curses the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Obviously God
places great emphasis and importance on the Holy Spirit. Why don’t we?? Before
God started creating the Holy Spirit Hovered over the dark, void, formless earth.
Once He Hovered, God started creating! The disciples were told to wait until they
receive the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit would give them power. They
waited. They received Him and they WENT with His power! Jesus when He was
baptized the heavens opened up and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the
form of a dove. The Holy Spirit led Jesus to a place of temptation and refinement.
I could go on and on, but we need to stop shoving the Holy Spirit in the corner
and not talking about Him because we might not understand everything. I am a
coach. I understand teams and roles of a team. The better a team can function
the more power and influence it has. I can’t tell you how many times a weaker
team has won because they were a closer team. We are the creation. He is the
creator. We need to do our job. We need to talk, invite, welcome, ask, worship,
and listen to the Holy Spirit. It is OK to talk about Him. I have never had anyone
freak out when I have said this. Anyway I get real fired up when I talk about this.
I started telling him about my testimony. I could see that he was really interested
in what I was saying. It was piercing his heart. He was getting tears in his eyes. It
is all the Holy Spirit. I asked him if he would be comfortable sharing about his life.
He started opening up to me about his troubled past and some of the things he is
struggling with. His Father wasn’t in the picture either. He was in desperate need
4. of a God encounter. He is living with his grandmother. I believe God has given
me a gift of being able to speak to the hearts of our youth. He was in desperate
need of truth. I told him how God has a great plan for his life and the past
struggles are just a tool used by satan to knock him out and keep him down. I
spent some time praying for him and sharing what his identity is in Christ. Our
young people need to hear that. I invited him to our street prayer group every
Thursday. He came on Thursday. I was out of town. Todd McNamara another
person who leads our street prayer with me lead his group. He said that Will was
going up to houses and talking to people. Sometimes it can take several
experiences with us for a person to develop enough confidence to actually go up
to the house and knock/talk. He was doing that the first night. I have only seen
that one time before. Todd said there was an unbelievable experience with a
couple that wouldn’t open the door. They prayed with them through the screen
window. The Holy Spirit fell on them and they started weeping. They came out
and hugged Will and the group. The people wouldn’t let go. They were so
appreciative. Will looked at Todd and asked why we don’t do this every day. He
said that he would be there every day if it were offered. I am excited to watch
what God has in store for Will. I am happy that I did listen and even though I was
a little slow in acting it happened. I also love how Todd and the other people in
the group that night took him under their wing and he blossomed. We can’t do
this alone. We need each other. We need to put down the divides and come
together as His Church. Please keep Will lifted up in your prayers. It is time for
him to be released from all the lies that have been spoken over him.
Adrian Diaz is a student who shared his amazing testimony at our last Fields of
Faith event. I met Adrian a year and a half ago. God connected us right away. He
started coming to FCA and the Holy Spirit has been transforming him over the last
year. He has been recognized for two awards recently. It is an amazing story of
God rescuing a lost young man. It is a story of all of us. We are all lost without
Him. We are all in a desperate need of a Savior. What a Savior we have in Jesus.
Adrian is being recognized for turning his grades around this year. He was failing
math and now is getting A’s. What you won’t see is when the reporter asked him
what the biggest reason for this transformation. Adrian said, “I believe the
5. biggest thing that happened to me was when I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord
and Savior”. HAVE YOU? IF NOT DO IT NOW. DON’T WAIT. HE CAN CHANGE
YOU TOO. He told about how he goes out to pray for people and hand out
groceries. None of that made the news but God heard it.
Here is a link to Adrian’s whole testimony in my blog:

Keep Adrian and his family in your prayers.
I also had a lady named Sarah contact me. She has an unbelievable testimony.
She has felt God leading her to do similar things that she reads about in my blog. I
have been talking to her and praying with her. She believes God is giving her
direction to how He wants to use her story to impact people for Him. We are
going to give her a box of Bibles to hand out. Here is a link to her unbelievable
testimony.
Please join me in praying for Sarah that she will hear clearly what God’s plan is for
her and her family. Also pray for protection for her and her family. She has also
blessed us by praying for our group. I am thankful for linking us up to support
each other in prayer.
One more thing before I sign off. I feel I am being lead to write this. Right now
we are a group of people who go out every Thursday night. The stories you are
reading are from our street prayer group, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes
group (Holmes Huddle), and just interactions I have during my every day life. This
has been an amazing ride so far. I am so humbled by what God is doing. But I
6. have bigger dreams for this ministry. I want to make lasting impact on our
community and youth in general. I would love to have the ability to go to more
areas to talk with youth. If we can impact young people we can affect
generations. I would like to take young people in poverty on big trips. I would
like to expand into homeless ministry. I want to continue attacking the walls that
divide our communities, churches, cultures, and families. I would also like to
influence areas locally, regionally, and internationally. God is bringing people
from countries all over the world here each week to read what He is doing. It isn’t
just a coincidence. God is laying groundwork. I believe that there is someone
who wants to talk to me about my vision for this ministry. Here is my phone
