Antenatal care refers to the education,
supervision, treatment and care given to an
expectant mother from the time the conception
is confirmed until the beginning of labour. It

1.INSTRUCT THE PREGNANT MOTHER ON THE
IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL HYGIENE-
As a practical nurses, need to assist the
expectant mother in attaining healthier patterns
of living and to reinforce health-promoting
behaviors. Skin care, hair care, breast care,
dental care, bowel elimination, vaginal douching,
and clothing are important to the pregnant
patient.
BATHING-Daily baths and preferably twice a day
are advised.
Care of the breasts: Cleanliness of the breasts
is maintained. If anatomical defects are present
advise to seek medical help.
2.INSTRUCT THE PREGNANT MOTHER ON THE
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER NUTRITION-
DIET- supplementary iron therapy is needed for
all pregnant mothers from 20 weeks onwards.
(30mg of ferrous/day) (60-100mg/day) is given

The woman may continue her usual activities

and 2 hours at noon)
