“Oh no! She’s making me write a paragraph!”
How toWrite an Eight Sentence
Paragraph
First you need a topic.
Our topic is “why you
need the newest Call
of Duty.”
 She says:
 “Um. No.”
You want to get the newest version of
Call of Duty. So you say to your mom:
“Mom, I want the newest version of Call
of Duty.”
So, how do we get your mom to let you buy this awesome new game???
We convince her!
SO YOU MAKE YOUR REQUEST INTO A THESIS STATEMENT!
Change your demand into a logical, provable thesis…
Here’s your thesis
statement.
“Mom, I would greatly benefit from the
newest version of Call of Duty because it
will help improve my fine motor and
decision making skills.”
This is amazingly successful:
Now you have to think fast. You need two good points to prove Call of Duty
will help your fine motor and decision making skills. How could it do that???
You recently read in Gamer magazine:
It will improve your hand/eye coordination.
It will improve real time strategizing.
Let’s put it all together.
“Mom, I would greatly benefit from the newest version of Call of Duty
because it will help improve my fine motor and decision making skills. In the
most recent version of Gamer magazine, experts state ‘it improves
hand/eye coordination’ (Gamer 15). And despite arguments to the contrary,
Call of Duty has proven helpful in ‘real time strategizing’ (Gamer 17).”
She likes this, but she’s not convinced.
Now you have to come up with two explanations for each of your points. The
“HOW?” and “WHY?”
How will it improve your hand/eye coordination? Why
will this hand/eye coordination benefit you?
How will it improve your real time strategizing? Why
will this strategizing benefit you?
The answers are your commentary.
“Mom, I would greatly benefit from the newest version of Call of Duty
because it will help improve my fine motor and decision making skills. In the
most recent version of Gamer magazine, experts state ‘it improves hand/eye
coordination’ (Gamer 15). (1)Enemies jump out to surprise the player, causing
the player’s eyes and hands to work together faster.(2) This form of exercise
will especially help me when I’m driving.”
Hmm. Good
points

And despite arguments to the contrary, Call of Duty has proven helpful in ‘real
time strategizing’ (Gamer 17). (1)Though some might call the game mind-
numbing, the quick decisions the player must make creates an agile mind that
thinks in multiple ways all at once. (2)This fast-paced training will help me make
better decisions quicker and help me on tests.
Mom is digging this!
So now you just need to tie up the loose ends. You need a conclusion. Tell her
again why Call of Duty is good for you.
“With these facts in mind, one must conclude the
value of improved fine motor and decision making
skills is compelling, and therefore, you should buy the
video game for my betterment.”
Wow. Let’s put it all together and really sell her.
