Rules of “Slip-box”
• Put everything in one slip box
 You can avoid “many notes in many different places and cannot recall where
the paper was located”
• When filing “permanent-note” in the slip-box,
file each notes behind one or more related notes
• Add links to related notes
 This will help integrate as you read & connect old and new readings
• When writing “permanent-note”, interpret the meaning of the paper to your
topic in your words
 This will reduce burden of re-writing afterwards

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Ive been doing lit review in my original ways for 3 years But I met this book this summer vacation and I find it is extremely helpful. I changed my style and decided to use method. I thought it will be a good tips to share as many of you are developing research method now.
  • #3  Descritized and miss the whole picture Need to look back the literatures many times Analysis is structuralized but wiritng should tell one coherent storyline
  • #4 This is when this book comes in. Introduced a note taking system that will allow you to collect and integrate numerous pieces of notes
  • #5 Have brief idea of the topic structure before collecting literature, and update it as you read And collect literature by topic, or write down any ideas that pops into your mind and file it in a reference manager or notes And take the notes And the heart of the system is this slip-box
