How to make a s’more
1. HOW TO MAKE A S’MORE
Inspired by a conversation with a friend in Germany, who had no
idea what a S’more is. I found it harder to explain than I had
thought.
2. INGREDIENTS
• The first thing you will want to get are the
appropriate ingredients, consisting of:
• Graham Crackers
• Chocolate bars (traditionally Hershey’s)
• Marshmallows.
3. FIRE
You will need a fire. An open fire while
camping is preferable, but a stove burner or
candle will work just as well.
Also a stick of some sort, traditionally a
stick from a tree that has had all the bark
removed, but a skewer is just as good. Just
make sure it is long enough to allow you to
reach over the flames from a safe distance.
4. TO BEGIN
• The easiest way to begin is to make sure
that all of the extra pieces are ready before
you roast your marshmallow. You really
don’t want to be breaking up chocolate or
graham crackers with a gooey hot
marshmallow in your hand.
• Break the crackers in half so they are
squares. Do the same to the chocolate
bars. The chocolate squares (if using
Hershey) fit perfectly on the cracker
squares. It’s almost as if they planned it.
5. ADD FIRE
• Before you add the fire, though, you will
want to put the marshmallow on the side
of the stick that has the bark removed.
You don’t necessarily have to remove the
bark, but it will undoubtedly end up in the
s’more if you don’t.
• Put the marshmallow over the fire. OVER
not IN. Marshmallows catch fire easily
and they get really sticky when warmed.
6. WATCH THE MARSHMALLOW
• Seriously, watch it. As I said earlier they
catch fire easily. If it does catch DO NOT
WHIP IT BACK AND FORTH! The
marshmallow will stick to whatever, or
whomever it hits and cause some
damage. It’s basically a sticky flying
fireball at that point.
• They also burn easily. You are looking for
a nice golden brown color, not black.
7. ROASTED GOOEY GOODNESS
• After you have roasted the marshmallow to
a gooey wonderful golden color take it
away from the fire.
• This part can get kind of tricky. You will
want to take the graham cracker that has
the chocolate on it an put it under the
marshmallow, still on the stick. Then take
the plain cracker and put it on top of the
marshmallow, sandwiching it between the
two to hold it steady. Now slide the stick
out.
9. EAT
• This is a S’more. The campfire treat that
is as good under an open sky as a child,
as it is in your apartment as an adult. Eat
it. The good marshmallow and the semi-
melted chocolate mingle together like
silk. The crunch of the cracker add a
beautiful contrast to them. Savor it. You
will definitely be coming back for “S’more”
soon. (s’more=some more. Clever play
on words.)
10. OTHER PREPARATIONS
• You can also make them inside. Use a stove
burner or a candle as you would the fire outside.
You can also microwave it, but be very careful
as the marshmallow will expand rapidly and can
make a huge mess.
• A toaster oven can also be used. Put the snack
pre-made into the toaster oven on a tray. This
will cook the marshmallow and melt the
chocolate. Be careful as this can make a mess.
Also do not use the toast setting.
• An oven would be used the same as the toaster
oven.
