In Australia there is increasing recognition of the challenges surrounding flooding and stormwater, but determining the best solutions is not always straightforward.
This Slideshare introduces the ways in which Hydro International is helping engineers to develop better stormwater management and flood mitigation projects in Australia.

3. Flood risk and stormwater
management in Australia
are critical responses to
the increasing regularity
and severity of the
country’s natural disasters.

4. Successive Australian
governments have recognised
the need for coordinated and
cooperative efforts to help
withstand and recover from
emergencies and disasters.

5. There is still no current Australian
Standard for flood protection products,
which means the British Standard
Institutes PAS 1188 (1 to 4) is often
used as the default guide for product
performance.
www.hydro-int.com5
6. However, the lack of an Australian
standard means the category
is largely self-regulating, as
product manufacturers have to
certify that their installations will
meet the protection levels of the
designated flood height.

7. A lack of direct regulation of
industrial stormwater runoff
leaves the door open to a wide
variety of solutions which,
while giving engineers wide
powers and discretion, is also
problematic because there is
a general lack of awareness
of the wide range and varying
quality of solutions available.

8. Many of those at risk have in the
past opted out of investing in flood
protection on the assumption that
they will never be impacted, though
this attitude is slowly changing as
the public and businesses come to
terms with the real possibility of more
climate change-induced flood events.

13. One excellent example of
the benefits of this expertise
and cooperation is a case
study from the town of Wigan,
in the UK, that echoes the
type of flooding recently
experienced in Queensland.
There, two Hydro-Brake®
Flood flow controls were used
to provide flood protection to
over 600 homes that were
at risk of flooding each year
from the river Douglas.

scheme, part of which involved
constructing an earth dam across
the river valley with a 100 m long
concrete culvert beneath, to form
an upstream storage reservoir.
The UK Environment
Agency implemented a
£12MILLION($21.9 MILLION)
15. The Hydro-Brake®
Flood flow controls
were installed in the culvert to hold
back floodwaters and store them
upstream, protecting the properties
downstream against floods to the
level of a 1 in 100-year flood -
reducing risk to just 1% per year.

16. When developing a mine, having a partner
with the expertise to provide suitable
stormwater treatment options is critical.
This is illustrated in another landmark
project which combined a Downstream
Defender®
and Up-Flo®
Filter to protect the
river Tuloma in Russia’s Murmansk region.

a chemically dosed Downstream
