This is an introductionary lesson on how to figure out percentages.

2.  Students, you will need:
 A calculator
 Your math book
 Your math notebook for note taking
 A pencil

3.  When you enter a store or supermarket, what
do you notice? (Wait for “Sales signs”)
 Have you ever purchased something on sale?
 (Wait for response)
 What does it mean to buy something on sale?
 (Wait for response)
 If there is a sale, is the price tag the final price
the customer will pay? (Wait for response)

4.  Stores often sell goods for a discounted price.
Typically, a store will discount an item by a percent of
the original price. In this lesson, we will look at an item
that originally costs $50 is being discounted by 25%. So
“25% off" refers to the rate of discount.
 In this lesson you will calculate sale prices based on a
certain percentage given, like 25% off.
 You will be able to master using a calculator to
calculate the new sales price.

5.  Rate of discount or percentages are used all
around us on:
 Sales on clothing, food or cars
 Cooking, sewing or repairs

6.  Yesterday we went over how to convert a
percentage to a decimal.
 Let’s practice these 5 problems in class. Try
them on your own first:
 1. 57%
 2. 42%
 3. 55%
 4. 2%
 5. 125%

7.  Please come up to the board and
quickly write what you got for an
answer:

9.  Here are a few vocabulary words to add to
your word bank:
 Discount – decreasing of the price.
 Discount Percentage – percent that the price is
decreased
 Retail Price – price that the customer pays.
 Customer: Someone who pays for goods and/or
services
 Goods-is the product that you will purchase

10.  Here are a few quick steps on how to
figure out a percentage.
 Example:
 How much will you save if the store has a sale on a
shirt that is 25% off of the purchase price?

11.  Step 1: What are the variables in this problem:
 Purchase price and the percent.
 Purchase price?
 $50.00
 The percent off?
 25%.

12.  Let’s calculate the problem together: (Using a calculator)
 Put 50.00 into your calculator
 Hit the “X” sign
 Then enter .25 or 25%
 Hit “ = “ sign
 $50.00 x 25% (or .25) = _______________
 Calculate the amount and show me the answer.

13.  The answer is????
 $50.00 x 25% (or .25) = $12.50
$12.50
Did you get what I did? $12.50

14.  What does this mean?
 If you wanted to buy that shirt, you would
save $12.50.

15.  Step 4: What will you have to pay for this shirt?
 Take your purchase price and subtract what the
percentage answer was that you got in Step 3.
 Purchase Price $50.00
 25% off - $12.50
 Answer??? _______

18.  Practice some on your own:
 Banana’s are on sale for 10% off. What is the
discount price and how much will you pay for
these banana’s?
 A pair of shoes are on sale for 50% off. What is the
discount price and how much will you pay for
these shoes?
 A basketball is on sale for 42% off. What is the
discount price and how much will you pay for the
basketball?

19.  Stores often sell products for a discounted
price. Most stores will discount an item by a
percent off the original price. The discount is
usually given as a percent.
 It is very important for you to be aware of how
to do this to make sure you are paying the
correct amount for your new shoes.
 Will you be able to go to the store now and
calculate what you will pay for those new
shoes that are on sale?

20.  Tomorrow we will be looking at the local
newspaper ads and figuring out if you have
enough money to buy items on sale.
 Some of you will be the store owners and some
of you will be the consumer to purchase the
items.
 Store owners, don’t forget your calculators.
 Consumers, don’t forget your money.

21.  Assign problems 1-15 (evens) on page 51.
 For each problem, please tell me how much
you will save
 And how much you will pay for the item.
 For example, please label your answers like
this:
 I will save $5.24 on the sale of apples.
 I will pay $3.56 for my new shirt.
