What is Hospitality?
“Hospitality is the provision of
accommodation, food and drink
and other relevant services.”
Hospitality as the Main
business
e.g. A company whose main business is
accommodation, food and drink.
An example would be the Hilton, which earns
it’s main profits through the sale of hotel
rooms, restaurant food and beverages.
The ancillary services are conferencing,
events and health & fitness facilities.
What is a hotel?
On your tables come up with a definition - in no
more than one sentence - of what a hotel is.
“A hotel is an establishment that offers
accommodation, food and drink to
anyone that is willing to pay for it.”

Guest Houses
‘Guest Houses are generally smaller than
hotels and may not provide food and drink.
Most guest houses are family run and only
have a few rooms. They are often situated in
large houses.’
‘Guest Houses were a popular way to spend summer
holidays years ago and you would not expect to have a
private bathroom.’
‘These types of establishments can be
found in any main tourist area/seaside resort.
Facilities have now improved in Guest Houses but
the product remains similar.’
