Hong Kong is a densely populated city located in eastern China with over 7 million residents living within 1,104 square kilometers. It was a British colony until being returned to China in 1997 but maintains its own political and economic systems under the "one country, two systems" principle. OVERVIEW
Hong Kong is a city and special administrative region of China in the eastern Pearl River Delta
by the South China Sea. With over 7.4 million people of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-
kilometre territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
HISTORY
Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong
Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon
Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War and was further extended when Britain obtained
a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The whole territory was returned to China in
1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and
economic systems from that of mainland China under a principle of "one country, two systems".
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISON
The territory is divided into 18 districts, each represented by a District Council. These advise the
government on local issues such as public facility provisioning, community program
maintenance, cultural promotion, and environmental policy. There are a total of 479 district
council seats, 452 of which are directly elected.

1. CUISINE
Hong Kong has one of the most renowned culinary backgrounds in the world. Exceedingly
populated with citizens from many other countries and territories, there is no doubt that Hong
Kong has an abundant variety of choices to choose from. Hong Kong cuisine is mainly
influenced by Cantonese cuisine, European cuisines (especially British cuisine) and non-
Cantonese Chinese cuisines (especially Hakka, Teochew, Hokkien, and Shanghainese), as well
as Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian cuisines, due to Hong Kong's past as a British colony
and a long history of being an international port of commerce.
2. Climate.
Hong Kong has four distinguishable seasons, just like the Southern Part of Vietnam. The ideal
travel season is late autumn, from October to around Christmas time when Hong Kong weather
is relatively more pleasant. The mild climate of Hong Kong makes it a year-round travel
destination. However, there are tropical cyclones and occasional squally thunderstorms between
May and November, and the typhoons in September. Should you happen to visit Hong Kong in
the typhoon season, you should not venture out too far when the typhoon warning is level 3 or
less, but stay indoors when it is higher. All shops and banks are closed when a level 8 typhoon
warning is given.

Hong Kong is packed with many wonderful attractions – so it’s easy for visitors to the city to

1. The peak or Victoria Peak is a hill on the western half of Hong Kong Island. It is also
known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak. With an elevation of 552 m, it is the
highest hill on Hong Kong island, ranked 31 in terms of elevation in the Hong Kong

2. Tian Tan Buddha: Tian Tan Buddha is a large bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni,
completed in 1993, and located at Ngong Ping, Lantau Island, in Hong Kong. The statue
is sited near Po Lin Monastery and symbolizes the harmonious relationship between man
and nature, people and faith.

2. 3. Lan Kwai Fong: Lan Kwai Fong – or LKF for short– is party central. It’s where you need
to be on a Friday and Saturday night if you’re in search of fun. You’ll find over 90
restaurants and bars packed into the district.
4. Hong Kong Disneyland: Hong Kong Disneyland is a theme park located on reclaimed
land in Penny's Bay, Lantau Island. It is located inside the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
and it is owned and managed by Hong Kong International Theme Parks. It is the largest
theme park in Hong Kong, followed by Ocean Park Hong Kong.

4. Architecture
Hong Kong has the world's largest number of skyscrapers, with 317 towers taller than 150
meters (490 ft), and the third-largest number of high-rise buildings in the world. The lack of
available space restricted development to high-density residential tenements and commercial
complexes packed closely together on buildable land. Single-family detached homes are
extremely rare, and generally only found in outlying areas.
5. Government and Politics
The politics of Hong Kong takes place in a framework of a political system dominated by its
quasi-constitutional document, the Hong Kong Basic Law, its legislature, the Chief Executive as
the head of government and the Special Administrative Region and a politically constrained
multi-party system.
6. Economy
The economy of Hong Kong is a highly developed free-market economy characterized by low
taxation, almost free port trade and a well-established international financial market. Its
currency, called the Hong Kong dollar, is legally issued by three major international commercial
banks and is pegged to the US dollar. Interest rates are determined by the individual banks in
Hong Kong to ensure they are market-driven. There is no officially recognized central banking
system, although the Hong Kong Monetary Authority functions as a financial regulatory
authority.
MAIN PROBLEMS
1. Transportation
For a city with a population of about 7 million, it's amazing that Hong Kong's public
transportation system carries approximately 14 million passengers each day. Trains, called the
MTR, carry half the load, and it's not difficult to see why. It is extremely convenient to get from
one place and after living here for a while any journey that takes more than 30 minutes suddenly
seems like an impossibly far distance. But sometimes, the transportations are overwhelmed and
causes traffic congestions or unexpected incidents. Also, it’s easy to be infected by diseases
when you live in such population.
2. Dense Population
The population is also an urgent problem in Hong Kong. With 7 million people, drawbacks are
unavoidable, such as
 More problems with the distribution of wealth and resources
 Problems with food security as pressure on the land due to the larger population
increases.
 Increased pressure on the forest-covered area which leads to deforestation.
 More problems in the framing of bills and policies, as more population leads to more
differences in opinions, needs and beliefs. ( If its a democracy )

3.  More competition for resources also induces more stress and affects the general well
being of the people.
 More chances of the outbreak of epidemics or pandemics or any other widespread
disaster.
 A larger population resulting in a larger diversity of beliefs, ideals often cause tension too
and can be violent or pose a threat to the integrity of the country.
 Democratic Crisis
 In the last decade, Hong Kong’s score in Freedom in the World annual study of political
rights and civil liberties, declined from 68 to 59, reflecting persistent attacks on free
expression, assembly and the rule of law. Much of Hong Kong’s democratic erosion is
the result of growing encroachment from the mainland Chinese government, which seeks
to curtail Hong Kong’s autonomy. Hong Kong is among only 30 countries and territories
of the 209 examined by Freedom in the World to see such a drastic decline since 2009.
 After the return of Hong Kong, a new page of espionage broke out in the region.
 Began with the advent of the man called the first spy of Hong Kong, John Tsang Chao-
ko, who was later expulsed without any confirmation or declination from the
Government.
 It was reported that Britain and the USA left but deployed a massive spy system in the
area.
 Espionage is anticipated to be increasing this year due to the democratic crisis and
geopolitical tectonic shifts.
 Spying activities are spreading as the development of multinational companies and
corporations, which Hong Kong is full of.
 In 2016, Symantec, a technology company belonging to the 500 largest enterprises in the
United States voted by Fortune, said that a cyber-espionage organization called Buckeye
has diverted the target of attacking to Hong Kong, instead of the USA

4. 7. Victoria Peak Tram | Skip The Line Take A Taxi. The line just to purchase a ticket
to ride the Victoria Peak tram can be over 2 hours long. We had one good look at
the line and realized there had to be a faster way to Victoria Peak.
8. Carry An Umbrella At All Times. Always always always carry an umbrella with
you, the weather in Hong Kong is unpredictable. Hong Kong gets an average of
101 rainy days a year! We visited in September which averages 8.5 inches of
rain if you visit between June-September never leave without an umbrella.
