Reggaeton originated in Panama in the 1970s from the mixing of Spanish-language rapping with Caribbean music styles. It developed from the migration of Caribbean workers to Panama during the construction of the Panama Canal. While some argue reggaeton is simply a copy of Jamaican reggae sung in Spanish, reggaeton has established its own style and popularity. Popular reggaeton artists include Shakira, known for "Hips Don't Lie", and Daddy Yankee, known for "Gasolina".
