Japanese traditional houses are located in the outskirts of cities in Japan. They are designed to withstand the temperate climate with hot summers and very cold winters. The houses use local natural materials like wood, clay, thatch and tile. They feature shoji (paper screens), slanted roofs to allow rain runoff, and tatami mat rooms that can be used for both sleeping and living. The design of the traditional Japanese house allows it to stay cool in the summer without electricity by using pale shoji screens and insulated materials.
