- 16. 16 主席賀辭 Message from Chairman 16 主席賀辭 Message from Chairman 16 衷心感謝各位會員和各界友好在過去一年對本會大力支持， 令會務在各方面都有一定的進展。我會去年發起的會員招 募運動，增添了三十多位新會員。本會最受歡迎的每月交流 晚宴，由前年平均三十多人參加，發展至每月平均近五十人 參加！去年的創新科技論壇，首次和香港貿易發展局合辦， 作為秋季電子展覽的重點研討會 (Symposium on Innovation and Technology 創新科技論壇 – Power of IoT and Emerging Technologies)，八個專題演講和兩個討論環節一共吸引了四 百多間公司/機構近六百人參加！論壇的交流午宴亦有192位會 員、嘉賓參與，和各講者進一步交流，情況熱烈！ 本會去年亦加強與其他友好團體合作，互相支持，協辦的項目包括香港貿發局在4月舉 行的亞洲照明研討會，在10月舉行的戶外照明研討會，和香港工程師學會電子分部在 4 月有關智慧城市的電子專題研討會，及和香港科學園、香港無線科技商會 (WTIA) 合辦 的兩次每月交流晚宴。其他有合作的機構還包括各友好商會、生產力促進局和各研發 中心等等。 時至今日，電子科技已經無處不在，滲透入各行各業和市民生活的每個角落，而且可 以斷言，它也將繼續支配人們未來的生活方式。智能化是一個必然的趨勢，利用物聯 網、雲端運算和大數據，推動智能城市和追求智能生活一定會為業界帶來更多商機！ 人工智能(AI)，虛擬實境(VR)及擴增實境(AR)科技，亦會進一步豐富智能化的趨勢！ 本會在未來一年，會繼續朝這些方向進一步探討。 在未來一年，我會將繼續會員招募運動，邀請更多不同科技行業的同業加入。繼續以 務實的態度，進一步推動會務，聯繫會員會友，加強作為一個電子科技平台的建設。 透過每月的交流晚宴和其他活動，加強與其他科研和專業機構的連繫和合作，讓會員 更好地掌握電子科技和經濟發展的大趨勢，更好地裝備自己，趕上這個瞬息萬變世界 的步伐。 最後，謹代表本會同寅恭祝各位業務興隆，身體健康，生活愉快！ 香港電子科技商會主席 吳國豪先生

However, with people of today craving almost instant gratification, virtual reality platforms are a definite technology of the future. Platforms. Connecting various wearable devices, various apps, health care practitioners and insurance companies through a unified platform including AI will ensure maximum customer engagement. This will be an important step in supporting the drive to decrease long term healthcare costs by improving our general health and wellbeing. Collaboration among start- ups as well as established companies in the field of healthcare and fitness monitoring will be necessary for the success of such initiatives. To explain the above technology trends better I will use the example of a company that is in the forefront of the trends. - 53. 53 Advanced materials can be a game changer for innovative product development. Competition in the market place, especially for hi-tech products, has been fierce throughout the last decade. Manufacturers must develop products that are significantly differentiated in order for survival. Typically, products can be differentiated in three areas – product design, manufacturing technology and key materials. While product design can define unique markets and applications, and advanced manufacturing can drive down costs, innovative materials can be used to develop novel and advanced functionalities. Advanced Materials in Upcoming Industry Trends Dr. Peter Lee* Chief Technology Officer Nano and Advanced Materials Institute, Ltd. (NAMI) Member of HKETA * Contribution from Dr. Paul Ho and Dr. Tracy Liu, R&D Directors of NAMI In the electronic industry, mobile and wearable devices are among the fastest growing sectors, and some of their key requirements can be satisfied by adopting advanced materials. Batteries and sensors are key components for these devices, where traditional bulky and rigid components are not suitable for. Breakthrough in battery and sensing technologies are urgently needed in these areas. All portable electronic devices obviously need high capacity, fast charging, and safe battery sources, but mobile and wearable devices also require all
- 54. 54 components to have small form factors, lightness, and for some, even flexibility and ability to operate in extreme conditions (eg. hot and cold temperatures). High capacity electrode materials like Si anode are known but these materials typically are structurally unstable, especially during fast charging cycles when the electrode materials expand and shrink leading to eventual structural degradation. Materials with designed nano structures can be fabricated to provide a rigid and stable platform to either act as or host high capacity electrode materials for Lithium-ion Batteries (LIB). Examples include a new spinel Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO) cathode material which can be fully charged in 12 minutes and a Si nano particle based anode material with a carbon core shell that can achieve at least 5 times capacity of typical graphite anodes without any structural issue even during fast charging. Novel electrolyte formulations have also been developed that allow high current pulse charging at extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 85 C. In addition, Positive-Temperature-Coefficient (PTC, resistance increases with temperature) materials can be incorporated in LIB to act as fuses for over-charge and high-temperature protection. For wearable devices, flexibility is an additional important requirement for the battery source. Nano fiber is the key material for a truly flexible battery that can be integrated with most wearable devices. A thin but dense and extensive network of polymeric nano fiber, with typically tens of nanometer in fiber thickness, can be used as a LIB separator. Its porous yet dense structure allows easy flow of ions within the electrolyte through the separator, while at the same time, providing the structural integrity to separate the cathode and anode even when the battery is fully bended. This type of flexible batteries can generate a paradigm shift by enhancing a new generation of wearable and flexible electronic devices through a safe battery with flexible form factor. Sensors for wearable devices have specific requirements that drive the need for new sensing technology. Wearable sensors not only need to be compact, but also have to be fabricated on different flexible or even stretchable substrates. Nano fiber, with its high surface area and flexibility, is a good platform to host different sensing materials for high sensitivity. Printed electronics is a cost effective technique to fabricate sensors and other devices on flexible substrates. The key materials for printed electronics are the functional inks that include the basic conductive, insulating, and semiconducting materials for most electronic devices. Additional inks include piezoelectric and ferromagnetic materials that can be used to print energy harvesting and RF devices respectively. The functional materials in the inks are most often in the form of nano particles in order to maximize the ink’s effectiveness. Advanced materials have been around for a long time, and the current growth of mobile and flexible electronics provides an opportunity to harness the unique properties of these materials for innovative product development.

It is about the nitty gritty time to consider a practical policy to proliferate innovation and excite the growth of expertise and build branding. There is no doubt that the progression of technology will result in various advantages. It is anticipated that a deeper training may fulfill the shortage of expertise and will help to build up intellectual property rights (IPR). The outcome is to facilitate a noticeable increase in GDP (leveraging on technology growth), provide improvements in energy efficiency and thus bring forward a pragmatic eco system and infrastructure for the betterment of expertise build- up. The Eco system can potentially improve the deteriorating climate change, and, above all, help the community to achieve a higher standard of living. In the Internet of Things (IoT) area, Hong Kong needs IoT sensors at strategic areas before IoT projects can be realized. One of the effective ways is to install IoT sensors onto lamp posts along the high ways and buildings. At this point in time, this is difficult to get done because of the governance. In view of the need, smart governance needs to be in place. I really hope that government may investigate this issue and facilitate necessary amendment. There are other challenges that we are still facing with. - 56. 56 technology advancement is attributed to the following factors: the shortage of expertise, a lack of appropriate governance to assist the advancement of smart city, and the ineffective allocation of financial resources. The education system in Hong Kong is satisfactory and the effort from the Hong Kong Government is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated. The foundation and professional knowledge of students, professors and engineers are excellent and qualified for the standards required to convert our ideas into practice and so far, they have achieved outstanding work. However, an adaptive scheme and policy from the Hong Kong Government is also required in order to foster and nurture a pleasing sustainable environment for the development of technology and IPRs. An intense training scheme is proposed in order to achieve these targets. Traditionally and currently, Hong Kong has a low tax rate as well as an excellent judicial system. The system exists in order to fully protect IPR and thus facilitates a free trade system. In order to maintain a free trade system, small to medium enterprises (SME) are essential fundamental building blocks in Hong Kong. It is envisaged that if students, engineers and SMEs can be nurtured by increasing the level of participation (e.g. building IPRs) in a variety of mega scale projects and local expertise. As a result, a variety of technologies can be equipped to a higher level of standard. An example is now given to illustrate the scheme/policy. Take the case of smart metering from the utility of energy, which has a potential to be distributed across a wide territory soon. Students (including PhD, undergraduates and sub-degree/HD students), engineers and SMEs will be qualified into such development scheme right from the beginning of the project. IP will be identified and all parties will work towards the development of the specific IP. By leveraging on the mega scale project roll-out, SMEs will be sustainable and engineers/students will be cultivated, trained and fully equipped. For instance, a PhD student will start their research for the agreed development of their assigned specific IPR right from the beginning of the project. Therefore he or she will not look for a suitable job after three to four years of training (which is normally not specific to the given task currently). Thus the students concerned will likely be able to develop the specific skill set and qualities in their given period of study as well as developing an extraordinary level of expertise. In order to achieve this, I would propose companies who will participate training to pull in their original training funds into the central pool, say X1 amount (another company pull in training funds into the central pool, say X2 amount, so and so forth….) , and all participating companies sum up to contribute an amount of X. The idea is to request and ask the government to pull Y amount to create a Z amount (where Z=X+Y) to provide a greater amount of training financial aid package. By doing so, SMEs can excel, very skillful engineers/ professionals can be trained and equipped to a high standard, and IPRs will be generated. This scheme will assist technological discoveries and cultivate strong characteristics of future talented stars of Hong Kong. This will certainly help to build a prosperous Hong Kong for its citizens and in particular, brings very bright future for the future younger generations to come. My slogan is “Be proud to be an engineering professional, and everybody owns their home within ten years!”. I really wish that Hong Kong may excel to a greater dimension !
