The ideology of Nazism was shaped by Hitler's belief in German racial superiority and opposition to liberalism, democracy, and human rights. It stressed subordination of individuals to the state. The Nazis also believed in Lebensraum, the idea that Germany needed more territory for settlement to strengthen the German people. They applied concepts of social Darwinism to claim that the Aryan race had evolved to a higher level than other races. Hitler defined Jews as a race rather than religious group and said the ultimate goal of the German government should be removing Jews from German territory altogether.
