From 1800-1860 the city grew gradually with more governmental buildings as well as the emergence of the Mall as a civic space. The period from 1860-1900 was a time of massive infrastructure investment and population growth, turning Washington into an urban center.

Introduction
After 1800, the United States militantly expanded westward across North America, confident of its right
and duty to gain control of the continent and spread the benefits of its “superior” culture. In John Gast’s
American Progress (Figure 11.1), the white, blonde figure of Columbia—a historical personification of the
United States—strides triumphantly westward with the Star of Empire on her head. She brings education,
symbolized by the schoolbook, and modern technology, represented by the telegraph wire. White settlers
follow her lead, driving the helpless natives away and bringing successive waves of technological progress
in their wake. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the quest for control of the West led to the
Louisiana Purchase, the annexation of Texas, and the Mexican-American War. Efforts to seize western
territories from native peoples and expand the republic by warring with Mexico succeeded beyond
expectations. Few nations ever expanded so quickly. Yet, this expansion led to debates about the fate
of slavery in the West, creating tensions between North and South that ultimately led to the collapse of
American democracy and a brutal civil war.

Port Bath British colonial Customs service & Sailing Ships

Alexander Hamilton was the founder of the Federalist party and the first Secretary of the Treasury, during which time he established the nation's financial system and helped form the Federalist Party. The Federalist Party supported a strong national government, a national bank to provide loans and stabilize the currency, and close ties with Britain. Hamilton's policies were controversial but laid the foundation for the country's economic growth and ability to compete internationally.
Slave Ship Museum Feasibility Study
This preliminary feasibility study examines creating a National Slave Ship Museum in New Orleans. It received funding from the National Park Service. The museum would recreate the slave trade experience, preserve stories of slaves who passed through New Orleans, and serve an educational purpose. It would be located at the former Entergy power station and include a replica slave ship exhibit on the river. The study evaluates the historical background, proposed concept, education programs, site, market, and financial feasibility. An additional $350,000 is needed for a final feasibility study.
The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War began in 1754 due to competing territorial claims between France and Britain in the Ohio Valley region of North America. Initial battles involved the British under George Washington being defeated by the French at Fort Necessity. In 1755, British General Braddock was killed in an ambush by French and Native American forces. The war escalated into the global Seven Years War between the major European powers. With increased resources, the British reversed their fortunes, capturing Quebec in 1759 and Montreal in 1760, eliminating France's North American empire. The 1763 Treaty of Paris ended the war, ceding French lands east of the Mississippi to Britain.

What does “Proletariat” mean?
From the Latin proletarius: a person having no wealth or property and only served the state by producing offspring.
By the mid-17th century “proletarian” and “proletariat” were used in English to describe common workers.
Today, these terms are used to describe the working class in broad terms.
Why call it the“Atlantic Proletariat”?
Social historians argue that a wide-ranging group of workers provided the labor necessary for colonial expansion in the Atlantic economy of the Americas from the time of contact between European, African, and Native American Peoples.
Who were the Atlantic Proletariat?
Indentured Servants
Slaves
Dispossessed commoners
Transported felons
Religious radicals
Urban laborers
Soldiers
Sailors
Pirates
Native Americans
Why focus on workers?
Of course, we can look at other factors when studying the Atlantic economy:
Technological advancement and knowledge driving exploration (better sailing ships, navigation methods, etc.).
Agricultural advancement (cultivating crops).
Political developments fuelling expansion and trade (see textbook chapter 1!).
Religious motivations (Spanish, Portuguese, and French Catholic missionaries, English religious dissenters, etc.).
Why focus on workers?
Ordinary workers did the labor that was essential to the rise of the Atlantic economy from the 16th through 19th centuries, which in turn fueled the growth of the modern global economy.
At the same time, many members of the Atlantic Proletariat tried to resist or adapt to conditions that were often brutal, violent, and inhumane.
Processes that help create the Atlantic Proletariat
Expropriation: The seizure of common property used by the many (ordinary people) and put in the hands of the few (governments/kingdoms, colonial corporations). Examples:
Spanish conquistadors seizing lands in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America to create enconmiendas controlled by wealthy Spanish landlords under the Spanish crown.
Wealthy lords enclosing the commons (shared agricultural lands used by poor communities) in Great Britain.
English corporations like the Virginia Company that set up agricultural colonies on the east coast, claiming property for themselves and the English crown.
Processes that help create the Atlantic Proletariat
Exploitation: The act of mistreating someone to benefit from their labor. The work involved in expropriation was particularly exploitative:
Encomiendas: Native Americans forced to work for the Spanish landlords, clearing land and harvesting crops. African slaves later imported to the Spanish colonies.
Enclosing the commons: Poor people kicked people off the land, forcing them to become tenant farmers, move to the cities for work, or become indentured servants in America. Poor people also imprisoned and forced to work; many sent to work as sailors or to work in the Americas.

At one point, New York City was second only to Charleston in the number of slaves. When Wall Street was actually a defensive wall, half-freed blacks formed a community north of it, outside the wall. They were denied, by law, from burying in the city so had their own burial ground. What happened to it?
